I hope your scan goes all right. ;o; Trouble standing and seeing is never a good sign.
About the fandom, just chalk it up to the fact that Geass is too complex for most of its fans to properly understand and they have to simplify it to be happy. They either want Boku!Suzaku or Ore!Suzaku and cannot truly fathom them being the same person. And I never understand why anyone wants to be so quick to turn down a wonderful study in human nature. It took me a little while to warm up to Suzaku because I thought that he was the Generic Mecha Protagonist that the writers (rightly) put in a secondary character position. When I re-marathoned the show with a friend, he ended up eclipsing Lelouch for me in that final episode.
In a show like Geass, there's a strong feeling that the viewer should "pick" a side, so people get lost in that and forget to watch the show :|

It took a little while for me to warm up to him too. It's just. . . kind of how it goes. Though you're right, fandom often picks sides -- the recent example is in my GameFAQs spoiler thread, so I'm like ". . . guys come on let's not do this."
