Picking the least impressive contestant seems to be endemic to some countries. People in the UK have complained about it for ages: they have a really strong music scene, with tons of successful bands coming out of the British Isles and going on to international success...but the UK Eurovision people inevitable choose some mediocre folk-poppy act that nobody will ever hear from again after the contest to represent the country.

I feel like part of the problem with the UK is that they're one of the biggest contributors to the EBU, and are thus guaranteed a place in the final regardless of whether or not their song is actually any good.
