The good news is that the laundry is done. The bad news is that the Jeep threw a rod and the engine is blown. Estimated repair cost: $4000 (yes, that's three zeros you see there.)

Interesting. I always wondered what the end of my rope would feel like and here we are.

Yeah, and after doing some digging, that's not wholly out of line. New engine is in the $1100-1500 range, labor is another $1100ish, $600ish for misc hoses and such....

The challenge is that my year Jeep isn't made domestically anymore. So, yarg.

Well, it's nice to know you're not getting randomly gouged, but if you don't have the money, you don't have it. I imagine you already know this, but some used cars are probably less than that overall. Good luck finding a solution that lets you keep catering!

I was quoted yesterday $1500 to re-grind engine cylinders or $3000-$4000 "new" refurbished engine. Add a $400 radiator on top of that.

Sympathy and empathy both.

My radiator was replaced last year, so that's one thing I don't have to think about. But yeah, isn't car ownership fun?

OMG, I'm glad that didn't happen while you were driving to Kansas!

Yeah, I am actually very thankful that the whole thing went down within a couple miles of home and I had it towed to the service station mere blocks away. Having the engine fall apart in the fast lane on I80 would have been 31 flavors of bad.
