Everything Murakami Haruki writes is amazing. I like Soseki, as well.

I think both the Brontes and Austen are utter shit, but I'm (re-) reading them soon as well since they're much-referenced on the GRE Literature exam.

Yeah !! My first H.Murakami was Norwegian Wood. Fell in love with it immediately!! Bronte & Austen are usually either for class assignment or pleasure reading. In my case its more of introduction. I haven't read much classics. So I'm choosing some to start with. Hopefully its good.

Do let me know if any of the other authors you're reading (aside from Steele) are worth a read. And if you want recommendations (particularly Japanese or Chinese authors) after you finish these, let me know! As far as classics go, if you haven't read Don Quixote, you most definitely should. And if you have, what did you think of it?
