Yeah real mermen don't laugh or cry or fall in love very few emotional states are government approved.
Lars may only have tickling I don't think human humor will translate and funny faces will just bring out Zed's fear that Lars is insane so...hmm have to work on that.
There's a few more explorations then the big boat sinking scene like the end of Titanic and then this book is done.
