Does anyone know if there is a way to turn off the feature of getting a message every time someone you have friended uploads a user pic?

There is definitely a way to do that! It's somewhere in the journal settings, though I can't say where at the top of my head.

Okay... Go into your profile, click 'profile -> settings -> notifications, find the right one and uncheck the box that says you want that notification... and you won't get them anymore.
