I've seen that episode, and yeah, the analogy was an unfortunate one. But for one, I don't think Star Trek: Voyager is all that 'respected' among the general populace, and even those of us who've been Trekkies since the original series began must admit that actual science has never been Star Trek's strong suit.
Second, from what I've seen, it's the allegedly-brilliant psychologists and so on who've been dishing out the sensationalist pseudo-science for decades now - this stuff, for example. So whatever bullshit anyone might say about multiplicity in a fictional Star Trek episode, it doesn't hold a candle to the bullshit that's already out there under the guise of non-fiction.
What really grates on my nerves is the fact that all multiplicity is automatically assumed to be "MPD/DID", when as a matter of fact, it's not. I find little or nothing in any of those MPD books that relates to my own experience, and Kír won't have anything to do with them at all because they put him in that 'beyond angry' state almost immediately.
