So I've written fic, written meta, and seen the movie twice, and I've finally gotten down to writing my huge AWE review. And why, yes, I'm the biggest procrastinator this side of the Equator. Here be spoilers, obviously! And I'm leaving this entry public in case anyone else happens to stumble across it, and wants to take me up on some things.

Long Review? HECK YEAH. )

Clearly Barbossa doesn't get a lot from women who care. It pretty much killed me.
And just when all hope seems lost... Will's back again! How unexpected.
Really? Because that was one moment I had pretty thoroughly pegged, heh.
And no, I cried at the final passionate embrace, not at the leg-loving - that just made me laugh.
The latter reminded me very strongly of Buttercup and Westley, and it was odd. >.> I actually didn't hate Will or W/E in this film, which is also odd, since I sure as hell didn't love either before (their chemistry felt mostly nonexistent to me previously).
this had everything the second instalment of the trilogy was lacking in, and then some.
I will definitely agree that I far preferred this one to the second film; I managed to get through this one while only checking the petit soeur's watch ( ... )

For a little while I did think he'd gone for good, but when we saw Bill move towards him to cut out his heart I figured he'd be back. Though for one horrible moment I did fear he'd have tentacles. o.o
Yes, I got Princess Bride vibes too! And as for W/E... I accept that they're canon and meant to be together, and I want them to be together, but I love reading fanfiction where they're in other ships. It's just more interesting for me. Though perhaps now Will is all tall, dark and manly there'll be some good stuff out there. xD
I'd suggest going to see it a second time to form a good opinion, but you'd probably say no. ;D

I'm too calculating and much too insistently idealistic--that he obviously couldn't have tentacles, because everyone else likes Orlando Bloom far too much for that to happen. ^_ ( ... )

Before I felt the chemistry, but it was a little... boring to me. Just straightforward soulmate love, nothing very absorbing or original about it. My actual OTP in the fandom is an OT3 - Jack/Will/Elizabeth. That gives you the basic love, but Jack makes things interesting, and together they play off each other nicely (there's a wonderful essay on the subject, if you're in the mood for meta). But now both the characters have deepened, perhaps there's hope for that section of fandom after all!
Don't worry - it's obscenely long, you're right! The cinema even put an intermission in the second time I saw it! :O

-Quick nitpick--after looking at screencaps, that isn't Groves. It's a different officer, of whom it is, I don't know. IMBD doesn't have him--or if they do, they don't have his picture. Groves is the one a little later that goes and talks to Beckett, right before the kid hangs. Though I agree, I really, really liked that woman, even if I have no idea who she is. xD
-People thought the Singapore scene was too long? Really? I loved it. Especially the part with all the guns and Ragetti's peering. I lol'd.
-...And the breaking the toe joke was not funny, just gross. >.> Ya rly D: Was not funny at all. Just ew-ful.
-But his death. How he was killed. I. Am. Not. Happy. I feel cheated, and to be quite frank this is the part of the movie I hate the most. Completely and totally agree. I am so not happy with this part, and I feel that they've partially seemed to make the Navyboys expendable. I am not pleased with this in any way, shape or form--there's no sort of closure. It's just like "oh, *stab* ( ... )

I laughed at the peering, and all the ten-year-old boys in the cinema went "ewww". And then that was reversed for the toe scene. Different types of humour, I suppose. xP
Rarrrrrg, I know! In the first movie the Navyboys were the good guys! We were cheering them all the way! And here suddenly they're cannon fodder? Not. On. They're only trying to do their job, which is to protect law-abiding citizens! And I want to write fic where Norrington goes out with a bang. Or, you know, doesn't die at all.
Rags was adorable. I met Mackenzie Crook one time, and he's just like that in real life - really, really sweet and shy and OMGSQUEE! I was so glad to see him carving out a new eyeball at the end - the eye patch just wasn't the same ( ... )

That's it, I love you!
More seriously : great review here, the best one I've read, actually. And I find myself agreeing with everything you said ( Especially the Calypso-Zilla, and the whole W/E development).
The Princess Bride has been my favourite movie ever since I first saw it, and I've read the book an insane amount of times. Maybe that's why I felt so much PB vibes in that movie. I was half expecting Davy Jones to say "Arrr, Fear the Dread Pirate Rob... err Davy Jones", and someone to say "Will never dies!"

Personally I would have liked to send Beckett to the Pit of Despair for some torture. ;D

Ogods, that film was so outrageous...
And about Calypso Zilla's rant? Personally, I didn't understand a word. I was like 'wtf? O.o... Wokaaay...'
This was so random, and ... misplaced? I quite loved Tia Dalma's character, but the whole calypso gig... I think I'd have preferred having her just being a powerful witch doctor; rather than being Calypso.
Speaking of plucky women, does anyone know whatever happened to Annamaria? Did she just fell into a plothole, or what? ;_;

I didn't catch a single syllable either. It was just "RAAAARRRG". And then crabs. I'd known Tia was going to be Calypso from waaay back before DMC was released, but I didn't like the way they did it. Some subtle foreshadowing would have been nice.
No, Anamaria just... wasn't included in any of the sequels. D: I seem to remember it was said by someone (I want to say Ted and Terry, but I'm not sure) that she wasn't necessary, and they thought it would cheapen her character to include her just for a few throwaway lines. I like to think she served on the Black Pearl until they raided a suitable ship, and then she managed to bully Jack into giving it to her to command. And now she sails the seas happily pirating. xD

although the pile of boots felt a little clichéd to me
Yeah. I get so tired of Nazi paralells. Honestly >>;
Though to be honest, I'm not sure how I felt about the hanging of the boy
The Hanged Boy annoyed me too, but probably for different reasons. I thought it was a bit much to start a movie on, and it was rather hackneyed. But the thing that saves it for me is Will Jr in the post-credits scene is the same actor as Hanged boy, which leaves lots of weird theories for 'omg the first scene is an alternate reality where Beckett won ohnoes D:!!11!' and is fun. Also, there's an actor credited as 'young Will' in the credits P:
back with James and... it's that scene.
I agree completely. James! They really did have to kill him off, I understand, but he got completely shafted. He should've had a better death scene! Anything! Anything at all! DDD:
...Elizabeth seeing her dadKeira can act! I thought she was just terrible in the first ones, though after rewatching CotBP and DMC she's just got the ( ... )

Yes, Nazi parallels! I've seen something like that in so many films. And yes - the movie just kind of shoved you right in there with the death and the singing the OMG THINK OF THE CHILDREN. Is it the same actor? They did both have very girly hair! ...Things must get very confusing in that family with three Will Turners. ;D
I wanted explosions and violence and heroics! That's the Commodore I know! Or at least have Jones take him out, rather than Bootstrap Bill ( ... )

The most blaringly obvious one is in The Lion King, ironically. But, yeah, it was a bit much. And I'm, like, 99% sure it's the same actor! I shall have to IMBD it! Some day! When I get off my lazy ass! Yes!
I was really hoping he was gonna kill Beckett, actually, but Beckett being the bastard that he, well, is, stabbing James first or something. It's two birds with one stone for the script writers, and it cuts two scenes into one, which works for time issues. Yeah.
I like her now! I've always been a bit apathetic, but the dad scene just sold it, for me. She's just been getting bad parts, methinks, where her character has maybe one emotion throughout the entire film.
Yeah, I spend the first ten seconds of his babytalk scene in shock, like, 'what is going on Oo;?!' and then just sat back and enjoyed it. Such pwn.
I can totally see that. Didn't he do the same thing with the eyeliner in CotBP? 'Tis a pattern, I tell you.

I would have just rather anything had happened instead of what did, which was rather "blah blah WHOOPS, YOU'RE DEAD JAMES."
I remember I did see one film she was really good in ages ago - The Hole, I think it was? She was only 15 then but she was amazing and did a topless scene, the SCANDAL!1
He did! And the gold teeth! He's a little bit funny up there, I think, but that's why we love him. xD

I must say, I agree with everything you said. Everything :) I have yet to read a review where I felt like the reviewer was not being biased just because they are a big fan. No other PotC fanatics would criticize anything, and would yell at fans who did, saying they weren't "real" fans. That's crap, and I'm glad to read that you understand that.
We can love these movies, but voice our opinions on them just as well.
Murtogg and Mullroy = Greatest Pirates Ever. Murtogg, Mullroy, Pintel and Ragetti? = OT4. SHIVER ME TIMBERS.
That made me snort water all over my keyboard. Thank you :)
I'm automatically friending you just for this kickass review. We seem to have a lot in common and that makes me smile!

LAWLZ, MY PLEASURE. They are such an OT4! Pulling their little faces and playing pirates like kids. xD
Wheee! Friending you back! ♥
