Doctor Who Series 5, Episode 12:Pandorica - OMFG!!!

Jun 21, 2010 10:52

Overall I have been unimpressed with series five of Doctor Who, but epsiode 12 blew my socks off.  So much so, that I wondered if RTD snuck in (yes Moffat has written some fantastic episodes, but not in this series, imo).

The episode was made of awesome as it linked all the elements of series together, curiously, everything but the crack in the universve, but I assume that will be revelead in episode 13.  I really must say, I was dissapointed with the quality of episodes this series thus far, which was surprising since Steven Moffatt has written some epic episodes such as Blink and the Girl in the Fireplace.  At first I thought it was just because I had David Tennant hangover, but it was the writing.  RTD brought a certain element to first four series and in dicussion with friends I think we nailed down that it was the gut wrenching element.  Episodes such as Left Turn and Doomsday made you feel absolutely gutted and wanting more.  We were all devstated when Rose was trapped in the alternate universe in Doomsday and  the departure of Donna in Journey's End wtih Donna.  I did not feel that with the death Rory because I did not care for him. I did not buy into the relationship between Amy and Rory, as Amy really did not seem to love him.  In the first and second series Micky became an important part of the mix, as the Tin Dog, and we loved him for that.  I like that Moffatt has brought Classic Who elements into the series, but the rest of it seemed meh.  The Doctor seems much less of a force to be reckoned with, a little daffy and confused. Also, it seemed that it was Amy who was the one to put the pieces together and save the day.  I am longtime fan, so I am just no comparing this seires/11th Doctor to the last four series.  I grew up with Doctor Who, and in particular I remember the fifth - seventh Doctors.  So, really, whilst I would not stop watching Doctor Who, I was not excited about episode 12 & 13.

Saturday night I was chatting with a friend online and we were both talking about the lack luster series. We both said that we were not holding our breath for brillance in the last two remaining episodes.  She downloaded the episode and five minutes into watching it she messaged me and told me it was epic, that I would fangirl over it and to watch it now. I thought, well, okay but really?  Again, I was for sure going to watch the episode, but I had disbelief over the fact it could be epic.  Thirty minutes later we had the episode downloaded and we started to watch and oh my God was my friend right.  Right from the first moments, where everything in the series was linked together I was riveted.  I sate there glued to the TV, absolutely amazed by the episode.  It was both riveting and gut wrenching.  Wow.  Just  wow.

So here are some of my thought :

- In the first scene that we see the Pandorica and the decription of it, I thought the Doctor is in there.  The universe has come together to lock him away.  I  thought that a version of him was IN THERE.
- I also thought, hmm, Amy is like Donna, she is special as everything revolves around her
- I finally like Rory!  I started to like him in Hungry Earth, but he was great in this episode and OMG, was the horrible when we find out  what he really is
- Amy remembering Rory and begging him not to change was gut wrenching.
- Rory fighting the change, but not able to and shooting Amy
- The moving cyberman parts was terriyfing, the head attacking Amy and then putting itself back together was absolutely horrifying and was Doctor Who at its best (if I was a kid I would have haunted by that and for sure hiding behind the couch)
- the Pandorica opening up empty and the Doctor being forced inside was OMFG!  All of his enemies joining together in the belief that it is him that will bring the end of the universe, wow!  Also, I hate the idea of being baried alive and the fact that the Doctor would be refined in the box, ick (would he be able to regenerate, as in, stay alive indefinetly?)
- the fat blue guy River met up, he said he had a vortex stabilizer taken from the rist of a young and strapping former time agent... was that Captain Jack?!?  The wrist was still attached... was that his wrist and would he grow another back like the Doctor?!?

And here are some of my speculations:

- I do not trust River, not one bit.  I think she is behind this and I think she is a Timelord, maybe an evil one like the Rani
- I need to check, but I was pretty sure that the Rani used Hypnotic lipstick as well, or at the very least she hypnotized people to do her bidding
- there has also been speculation that she is the Doctor's Daughter, I'm not sure if I buy that as she looks completely different and I did not think she could regenerate, she has healing ability, but not full on regernation ability?!?
- Earlier in the season she told the Doctor that he had NOT taught her how to fly the TARDIS, that someone else had, but in this episode she told him that he taught her how to fly
- She knows his name... but is she was Timelord, she would know it, so that does not necessarily make her trustworthy
- She has been imprisoned more than once, as she was in prison in the start of the epsiode and that was BEFORE the prison stint she told the Doctor about
- she told the Doctor she was in prison (the one in the future) for killing a good man.  Could that be him?
- Is she responsible for killing the Doctor, which forces his regeneration?  I do not mean in episode 13, but sometime in his future?  Putting him in the Pandorica box could be one of her attempts to do so
Either that, or she truly beliefs it is in the Doctor's better interest to be locked up when the universe is swallowed up
- or will she save the day?
- interesting twist that she was responsible for the TARDIS being blown up
- how are they going to fix Amy getting shot?  I really hope they do not press the rewind button (as common in Star Trek) to fix the problem

I cannot wait until Saturday to see how they resolve  (or if they will resolve or leave us hanging) everything.  I really hope I will not be dissapointed in the second part, but traditionally Doctor Who has not dissapointed with two parters and especially not season finales.

OMFG!!!!

omfg, tv, doctor who, geeky
