Reading some of these articles/comments has answered most of my questions about this, but I still wonder, what about January? I know chickens can live in unheated barns in winter, but the group heat and wind shelter help. Is it a non-issue? I'd believe you if you said yes, but I want to know what you've found out.

the harsh winnipeg weather isn't really an issue as long as you have the chickens "prepared" for it. An insulated home (coop) is nessesary, but the problem that you would in counter would be the freezing water. There are a couple different ways to resolve that issue, putting acouple heat lights in the coop and having the water placed under them will keep the water from freezing over, also you can make a fountain type deal where the water keeps circulating and there is a little heater in the water that's not hot, but warm enough to keep the water from freezing and cycling. "Mature chickens are very resilient and can withstand low temperatures well. In fact, you are probably more in danger of loosing chickens due to extreme heat than you are cold, as long as you provide them with basic shelter. Their feathers and body heat will often be sufficient to keep them warm and toasty throughout the cold winter months." (http://ezinearticles. ( ... )
