Tsunami Shijo is a Guardian. His kind were created with the strength, immortality, and ability of demonkind, but with an opposite purpose. They were to protect the weaker humans, to defeat the demons and other creatures who offered them harm.
In the earliest days of humanity, Demons and Guardians weren't quite as at odds with each other. At that time, Tsunami and a dual-sexed demon (who later called himself Takamiya) were friends and lovers. This relationship ended, most likely when conflicts heated up between the two more powerful races.
As the centuries passed, Tsunami traveled the world in search of demons and their ilk. He changed surnames roughly about once a lifetime, but he always kept the 'Tsunami' portion of his name. As the ages passed and mankind rose to technology, fewer Demons or Guardians remained on the Earth.
By 2059, Tsunami met and fell in love with a human woman. He was willing to abandon his role and live as a human man for his beloved's lifetime. However, he had not reckoned on his former lover and current enemy, Takamiya.
This demon found out about the woman, searched her out, and killed her. When Tsunami discovered her death and the killer, he went mad. He recklessly attacked Takamiya with his full power. His cunning adversary responded by knocking him down into the city below. Tsunami's power released a massive blast throughout Neo-Shinjuku. Tens of thousands of people died as a result.
Thirty years later, Tsunami was living in the ruins of Neo-Shinjuku. He ran a private investigations office in the top level of an antique shop. A friend and work partner, Tenku, lived with him. At this time a woman named Shizuka sought out his services. She claimed that her boyfriend, Eiji, had turned into a demon. After attacking, savaging, and nearly killing her, Eiji had run off to attack other people in the city. She wanted Tsunami to find her former lover and to end his pain and misery.
While investigating, Tsunami ran into a pair of wind user twins who attacked him and warned him off the case. He was sure they were connected to his old rival, Takamiya. He eventually unearthed a drug that transformed humans into Oni-like demons. He also found a connection between that and an upscale sex establishment called the Crystal Box. When Tsunami found out that Eiji was being kept there, he left Shizuka with Tenku while he went to gather more information. Shizuka drugged Tenku, got the information out of him, and left on her own.
Unfortunately, she got to Eiji first and was ripped apart by him, much to the amusement of the wind user twins and their boss Takamiya. That murder brought Eiji to his senses (though he was still in his demon form,) and he mourned over her corpse. Meanwhile Takamiya had transformed into his fully powered demonic form and sailed into the sky, waiting for Tsunami to come fight him. Tsunami made one stop to painlessly end Eiji's life and tell him that Shizuka was waiting for him.
Then he joined the battle with his old enemy. They discussed their past. Takamiya wished Tsunami to ally with him. He tried persuading him, seducing him, and then finally tried to destroy him. Tsunami would have none of it. He had been waiting for this opportunity for thirty years. He ended up transporting Takamiya into space and destroyed him.
Age: Roughly 10,000, appears in his 20s.
Canon point: At the end of his canon, just after he defeats his enemy Takamiya.
Personality:
Tsunami, despite appearances, is an ancient creature. He’s quite intelligent and wise. He’s also calm, steady, able to react quickly and unhesitating in the worst crises. He has much knowledge of human history, languages, battle tactics, and is well versed particularly in hunting demons and the like.
His outward mannerisms are opaque. His expressions are nearly always relaxed, peaceful, occasionally sly. His voice is tranquil. Even in battle, he maintains composure. There is a certain distance between Tsunami and the world around him. He has lived through countless eras, seen many atrocities and lived through the deaths of nearly everyone he has ever known, of his kind or humankind. Though he can care deeply about others, he rarely allows them into his personal life.
Tsunami's enemies and adversaries can at times bring out his darker side. Though he never loses control, he often plays games with the demons he hunts, or taunts them. He is utterly cruel and without mercy to those who prey indiscriminately on humankind. He does have sympathy for pawns, those who are simply used by his enemies, but he has no compunction about destroying those if he must.
He can be solitary and doesn't seek crowds, or many friendships. He is generally polite to his allies or casual acquaintances, but his impersonal manner rarely invites a deeper relationship. He is capable of friendship and is more informal and relaxed around his few close companions. Even with those, he won't willingly or easily speak of his personal life. He does show his affection by teasing, a far milder form of the mockery he gives his enemies.
Despite his peaceful exterior, Tsunami carries deep guilt and grief within him. Three decades prior, he killed tens of thousands of people with a backlash of his own power, and madness. He did this in response to his wife's murder. He considers his love for her a 'mistake,' now because of what it cost her, and because it made her vulnerable to his enemies. These incidents increased his distant personality and also made it more of a facade. He believes his deeper emotions are dangerous; to himself, to those he loves, and to innocent bystanders.
Powers/Abilities: Tsunami has multiple and useful fighting skills. He can levitate, speak mind-to mind, use fire energy, create barriers, teleport, and do all this with experienced control. He can also summon a deadly form of mist.
Ex of writing (may use on an app, if I ever re-app him anywhere:
Tsunami Shijo stepped beyond the misty barriers of condemned Neo-Tokyo, and into danger. The seedy alleys were full of vermin---human killers, drug dealers, prostitutes. As a guardian, he felt none of these dangers into his bones, even though he knew them by heart. They were none of his affair and he passed them by in graceful silence.
Until a scream and a growl, paired together, rose out of the darkness. Tsunami’s senses recognized the unnatural presence. Oni, or a servant to one. It meant to prey on the owner of that cry. At last, a fear he could answer. He flew through the alleys without a single heavy footfall. His power rose within him, twined with the most vicious aspect of his nature. He felt no reticence toward his prey. Those who killed humans were his natural enemies. Excitement thrummed within him, cruel and benevolent, but he kept it secondary to his thoughts. He was pure focus as he moved forward.
He reached the pair just in time to avert the intentioned death.
The Oni--roughly human in form--held a filthy street girl by her hair, and was lifting her slowly toward his misshapen jaws and curved bloody teeth. It had fed once already tonight. Soundlessly, Tsunami moved behind him, keeping to the shadows lest the light reveal his presence. He raised one hand and sent a blast of ice blue power against a filthy nearby wall. It exploded and smoldered there. The Oni dropped his prey like an animal might--and the girl scrambled up and away without another sound.
The Guardian paid her little mind. In the wake of the blue flame, the Oni saw him at last. A slight, tall man with moon colored hair. A poor threat in looks. But his deadly cold eyes and motionless face gave the lie to his humanity.
“Heh heh. A guy’s gotta eat,” the Oni said, while backing up a few steps.
Tsunami remedied this by lifting his hand again and forming his fire energy into a pressure barrier. He slammed this into the creature and started--slowly--to narrow its range around him. It would crush the Oni within a minute or two.
“HEY! Show some mercy, eh?”
A flitting smile crossed the Guardian’s face. “Perhaps. It depends on your attitude. May I ask the name of your Master?”
“Oh that. That’s easy uh. I work for this guy Takamiya.”
“Ah. I know of him.” Tsunami turned his back in a flowing motion of leather cloth. His barrier began to recede from the creature and lost its pressure. The demon grunted in laughter--and Tsunami had a small, cruel smile for that. His fire energy changed into curling flames and swept in on the demon at once, striking into his core and slowly burning him into ash. Satisfaction flowed through Tsunami as he watched his enemy smolder. No more would this creature prey on human flesh. Now, he was the prey.
“That’s so cruel,” the demon muttered as he fell to die.
Tsunami simply walked away without a backward glance. In the end, he found less and less amusement in eliminating these creatures from the earth. He had done his job too well-- Oni were scarce now. Perhaps even an ageless immortal could grow old at heart. What could his predatory, cold aspects turn to once all of his enemies were gone? He could not become human after all. That choice was left behind long ago. Nor would he ever seek it again.
With a quiet laugh at that, he headed towards home. This night’s hunting was done.
I formerly played this character at Discedo and Dirty Vegas once upon a time.
