I was just thinking this morning that I needed to update livejournal more, but didn't have anything update-worthy to note. Then I went out to buy a sandwich for lunch and discovered that my bank account was empty ( Read more... )

That's... very not good.

I hope they're being helpful in trying to get it back for you.

No, it really isn't.

They cancelled my card and the anti-fraud peeps are getting on it. But until I get my new card and they replace the missing moolah, I'm kinda stuck at home.
Probably playing WoW.
Hrm, this might not be so bad ;-P

OH NOES! Belarus is now scratched off my list of places to visit (where is it located anyway?) How the hell did he even know your pin? Craziness.

On unrelated note, I like your avatar :D

I think Belarus is one of the old soviet block countries. And knowledge of my pin aside, how did this crazy Belarusian criminal take the bank card from my wallet at some point after last Wednesday and replace it before yesterday?

Related to your unrelated note, danke ;-)

So you will be getting your money back? Good for you. It would suck to be robbed and not covered by your bank.

Hopefully the fraud investigators will be able to find proof (testimony of other people in my office/Tang Soo Do class, if nothing else!) that I couldn't have been in Belarus on Monday which means I'll be getting my money back I think.
I hope.
If they try and pull any funny stuff I'll be getting very creative with the insults I aim at them!

Your card probably got skimmed by someone with a card reader when you used it to buy something. That's why I like cash!

I had a similar thing happen a couple of years ago where someone "cloned" my card with a false reader, and it gathered my PIN in the process. One day I went to buy some stuff, and my card kept getting rejected ( ... )

mini_man was telling me that when you put your card into a reader and it transmits the bank account/PIN for verification, it's transmitted completely uncoded! This makes it absurdly easy to intercept for people who know what they're doing. Rubbish.

And of course it would be gratifying to see that thieving little cahoogan getting his just desserts! Especially since you got to go along and point the finger! Did you jump up and down and shout "String him up! String him up!"? If not, you should have ;-)
