Most of the time I am really ambivalent about my national identity, and sometimes I find it downright embarrassing, as I did 5 minutes ago. Some goddamn idiots who live in my dorm complex started setting off fireworks and blaring the Star Spangled Banner. I don't want to deconstruct American identity. yeah, you would think that the kids who are here would be more culturally sensitive than that, but apparently not. it's not surprising that some of the germans are rather cold and distanced toward americans when they've been subjected to that kind of unreflected nationalism every year. i HATE independence day, and i think it's really sad that i can't escape it, even when i'm not in the u.s.

i love fireworks, too, but i could only hear them last night, and i was trying to fall asleep.

If they play the damned Lee Greenwood song, you have my permission to kill them. If you get any trouble from the German authorities, suggest they listen to it, too, but make them sign a waiver that they won't hold you in violation of the Geneva Conventions.

I don't understand! I was watching C-SPAN a couple days ago and the House was just starting its session with prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. The whole flag/pledge of allegiance thing is absolutely beyond me. Can you say cult??? We get down on witches and Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormons, but this isn't any less weird. It's just not. And especially abroad-I don't understand. lol

Yes, it's amazing how successful the cleverly disguised soft power of the u.s. has been. All of these people think that they are expressing their free will and love of freedom and democracy when they are really just acting as stooges of the state. It's very cultish.
