http://www.shogi.net/arc/shogi-l/shogi_terms.txt Kaga loves college. It's got so much less bullshit than high school. The work is interesting with learning how to make real explosions, there are no fake p.e classes, no crappy teachers breathing down your neck, if you screw up it's on your own head 'cause they don't care, and if you want to smoke or drink so be it. No one gives a fuck. It's awesome. Besides he explains with a leer across the lunch table, the girls are so much hotter.
Tsutsui laughs in reply, but it's a polite kind of laugh, more along the lines of -if you say so- than actual agreement. He tilts his head slightly and comments that he actually liked mid and highschool, the work load was more structured and it was easier to keep in contact with people. He shakes his head sadly as he explains that though he has more free time these days than before, it's still difficult to organise a club because none of the executives have the same days free.
Kaga snorts and tells Tsutsui that he's a dork.
"Undoubtedly Kaga-san", Tsutsui easily agrees, before his phone rings and he's off to find Kohanne-chan and drop off the notes from their statistics class leaving Kaga to wonder when Tsutsui started adding a suffix to his name again... It's an interesting move from some one he's known ... shit for more than eight years now!
Kaga spots Tsutsui outside one of the lecture rooms, earnestly talking to a group of girls. It's weird but now that Kaga thinks about it, but Tsutsui always seems to be surrounded by girls, but never seems to have a girlfriend or go on many dates. Must be too chicken to ask them out even if he can talk to them fine these days. Idiot, you gotta play the game in order to win.
Ah well, Yamada-san had been looking for another guy for the mixer party anyway and he owed the four eyes a favour anyway. He scratches his head and decides that he owes the old four eyes a favour and can use it towards improving his love life. So he walks over and casually invites Tsutsui to the party and Tsutsui easily agrees.
As he turns to leave he hears a questioning noise from one of the girls and hears Tsutsui in a low voice reply with "friends, just friends" and thinks 'huh, maybe there's hope for him after all.'
A cute girl comes up to Kaga and nervously asks some round-a-bout questions about his tastes in girls "for a friend". It's cute, but far too high schoolgirlish for his tastes, so he tells her in his best impression of a bad ass, that it's way too sennichite, he likes more henka and kishu and people who can lay down the tiles on their own behalf. Oh and he doesn't like playing Koma'ochisen.
Tsutsui is impeccably polite and very quiet for the first part of the night, remaining firmly on the outskirts of the conversations. Kaga dispairs of Tsutsui, really he does.
"Come on you, you gotta be friendlier and talk more." Kaga tries to advise, as he appropriates the lovely Aiko-chan recently vacated spot to support his friend.
"It's not that simple." Tsutsui says looking troubled.
"What you need a book with step by step instructions? You can't bring that on a date! Dweeb."
"But you can bring it to a Go game!" Tsustui jokes. "Sometimes. Sort of. It doesn't really help much anyway." he modifies morosely.
"... Okay, that's just sad. Let me introduce you to Natsu, she'll show you a good time, she has a soft spot for the hopeless cases like you."
"What? No, I couldn't possibly."
Kaga pulled out his mobile and began dialing.
"Look it's nice of you to offer, but I don't need help getting a date."
"..." Kaga said as he looked up.
"I really don't!" Tsutsui says as he begins to go bright red. Tsutsui earnestly tries to explain to put Kaga's mind at rest, "Really I find that my studies are more important at this time." But is disrupted into ducking and crying out "Kaga-san!" as he's forced to duck the incoming paper fan.
"BAKA! They got to you didn't they"
"...Who?"
"Those teachers with their inane brainwashing schemes." Kaga poses with a handkerchief mock dabbing at his face. "You poor thing, trapped in those classrooms for so long, you don't even know the meaning of fun now at this point do you?"
Tsutsui puts on the driest tone he can manage and replies with, "...I could quote the dictionary definition?"
"Lo!" Kaga gestures to an imaginary audience. "He proves my point! I feel so guilty. How could I have not seen this? How could I have let a friend fall so low? I must rectify this, by giving you a crash course in fun."
Tsutsui looks bemused and cautiously replies with "that would be nice, Kaga-san."
"It's going to be better than nice, it's gonna be fun." Kaga retorts and finishes off with, "And drop the san, you've known me for how many years now?"
"Quite a few", Tsutsui says with a smile as his eyes twinkle behind his glasses, though Kaga thinks there's something in his expression that looks a little sad. Kaga decides it's probably because he's thinking about all that disrupted study time.
Kaga had always previously been able to meet up with Tsutsui whenever he wanted to and didn't really need to think about it. He'd say something like, "if you're in on Wednesday want to meet up for lunch?" and Tsutsui would say something like "of course."
Now that he was going through Tsutsui's schedule, he was finding it harder and harder to figure something out for introductions. The damn four eyes had a larger social circle than Kaga did!"
Class Monday-Friday. On Mondays he helped out as the manager of their Universities women's league for the inter University Go tournament. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons were the Go club sessions. Anime club meetings during Thursday lunch times. Tutoring on Thursday afternoons with Kohanne. Friday lunches were spent with the mathematics society! In addition to all of that, there were also all of these little meetings here and there and plans to watch Go tournaments. And the damn four eyes even had a season ticket for watching base ball games!
If it wasn't so fricking damn geeky the lot of it, Kaga would cry. As it was, it was so damn geeky, he thought he would cry. Mockingly.
It turned out, that Tsutsui always likes to keep in contact with his friends and track of the ones that aren't so contactable. So when one of their classmates for middle school made it to first string for a baseball club he bought a season ticket to show his support. He also kept a carefully crafted scrapbook, filled with details such as Go interviews staring a certain blond banged acquaintances. He had even collected a copy of that newspaper article staring the shogi society that Kaga had managed to creep into a corner of.
"If your this much of a social butterfly, why the hell haven't you gotten a girl friend yet? You can not tell me that would of had more of an impact on all of your studies than... than this!"
"But it's so rewarding!" Tsutsui protested. "The mathematics society really helps with pushing my limits, and the anime society passes on notes from previous years, and the tournament's only a few weeks a way - I just can't let the others down!"
"Well no, that one I approve of." Kaga says thoughtfully. "Lots of potential contacts there."
"... Not really..."
"You met up with them all at least twice a week."
"As friends! Friends! We're not mutually compatible!"
"Aww, did you get dumped?"
"Not quite! Kaga! I really don't see how this is any business of yours!"
Kaga rolls his eyes and wonders if he could convince some of the girls to help Tsutsui out, and drags Tsutsui to an arcade, where he tries to force Tsutsui mind for strategy into more bloodthirsty pursuits.
Kaga walks by the student announcements board to see if he can figure out a room for the Go club, he already knows the time sort of, or if he's going to have to follow Tsutsui there... next week. Tsutsui's just as obsessed with Go now as he was back in mid school, and Kaga has no desire to be dragged back into that game.
He spots a familiar face, Kohanne is sticking up a poster for the anime club. "Yo! You're Kohanne right?" He interrupts, and the girl turns to face him suspiciously with dark eyes. "You do tutoring with Tsutsui sometimes right?"
Her expression softens slightly with confusion and she agrees cautiously "yeah, I guess you could call it that."
"Tsutsui's a nice guy right?"
"... yes?"
"Was wondering if you could help me with helping to get Tsutsui set up with someone?"
"I thought I already was." She frowns at Kaga.
"Huh?"
"Yeah, I'd been helping him to strengthen his shougi skills since apparently his crush is a really good shogi player and he wanted to have something more in common with them."
"Weird. Wonder why he didn't tell me then." He preens in front of Kohanne. "I don't mean to brag, but I'm quite the shogi player, I could of taught him quite a few moves."
"It's really not my place to say." Kohanne replies with pursed lips as she abruptly turns away.
'Weird girl', Kaga thinks to himself.
As Kaga sweeps down the hallways, he has the feeling of being watched. And giggled at. He assumes it's just crush-girl and co, and that thought brings a cheerful smirk to his face. It's a good day after all and he does look rather bad ass today, even if he does say so himself.
When Kaga asks Tsutsui why the hell he never asked him for any shogi lessons since he would of been happy to teach him some good moves to be able to impress the girl, Tsutsui goes bright red and rushes off in embarrassment. Going so quickly that Kaga couldn't complete his plan of following him to the room.
Tsutsui was heading east though, so Kaga tries his luck wondering down the hallways in the east block, before he overhears one girl yell to another "I'll see you later, I'm going to the Go club meeting in 202"
Success!
When Kaga peered around the door frame, he was struck by the fact that (a) the Go club seemed to have more players than he thought. (b) with the exception of Tsutsui, they were all female.
Tsutsui turned to the sound of an opening door with a greeting, before rushing out the hall way, pushing Kaga away.
"Kaga! What are you doing here?"
"Just thought I'd check it out. How come you never told me, it was filled with babes?"
"Go is a pure game! I won't have it sullied by being turned into a dating game."
"And shogi isn't?" Kaga said annoyed. He had thought better of Tsutsui than to belittle Kaga's sport of choice. "You're learning shogi in order to impress someone."
"W-W-Wanting to be able to converse is not the same as wanting to impress!" Tsutsui stammers out.
"Oh come on." Kaga readies his stance, "You have a wide range of seduction techniques at your disposal playing the game, there's shining brilliance, of course that's a path limited to suave genius's such as myself, then you have the princess routine", Kaga widens his eyes, pouts his lips and poses one of his hands near his hair. "Oh, you're so strong, just like your ..." before he's interrupted by a thoroughly pissed of Go player.
"Look." Tsutsui says losing his temper and descends upon the wary Kaga, forcing him back against a wall. "I do not want any help getting a date." He says looming into Kaga's face. Kaga's uncomfortably made aware of exactly how tall Tsutsui really is, the damn dweebs growth spurt outdid his own, before Tsutsui's face comes in even closer and Kaga finds himself locked in a tight lip embrace. Kaga opens his mouth to protest and a tongue slides in, skilful with teasing sensation out and the only thing Kaga can think is, shoobute and hot.
Kaga sags as Tsutsui pulls back. "Understand, Kaga-san?" Tsutsui finishes reverting back to the polite addressing.
Kaga is left blinking alone in the hall way, wondering where the hell the four eyes learned to kiss like that. Itte, there was only one move left for Kaga to make.
"You know, I've been thinking" Kaga says as he pulls a chair up in the Wednesday training session for the woman's league next to an uncomfortable looking Tsutsui. "With all of the work I put into improving your social life, my own one's taken quite a hit."
"Sorry," Tsutsui starts, "but I did try-"
"So", Kaga interrupts. "I was wondering if you wanted to do anything about getting me a date. Want to meet up, tonight to talk about it? Perhaps over a shogi match or would you prefer Go?"
'That's how you do shoobute'. Kaga thinks smugly at Tsutsui's gaping expression. Kaga was after all a persistent bastard, and this was an acceptable solution to his goal of making sure his friend was having plenty of fun in his life. Besides he wanted to see what else the four eyes had learnt. It looked to be interesting indeed.
Omake:
The next day, in a tutorial room not far away.
"Mission successful!" Kohanne grins, "another successful mission for the ### district, of Japanese Federation of Yaoi For Life Fangirls. After the initial set back of approach via common interest, the advice to 'just shut up and kiss him', worked very well indeed!"
"I'm so glad!" Aiko squealed. "Tsutsui's such a nice guy, I'm so glad we could help him get with the person he likes!"
