Kage talks about literature. Again.

I read a lot of fantasy. That's just how I roll. Some sci-fi, the occasional 'literary fiction', but mostly fantasy. And lately I've noticed an interesting trend in fantasy fiction.

Teen-level fantasy are a lot more innovative, a lot more interesting and all together better than adult fantasy novels. I've just gotten finished with House of Scorpion by Nancy Farmer (who I want to grow up to be). I'm reading Thirteenth Child by Patricia C. Wrede. Both of these books have innovative ideas, interesting, involving characters and don't feel like someone is whopping you over the head with EPIC. Also, Thirteenth Child has mammoths in a steampunk america. Why would you not read this book?

It seems like most of the adult fantasy I see these days is something along the lines of 'a kingdom is in trouble, Character A has the secret power/secret device/secret plan to save it with the help of Characters B, C and D. Maybe I'm missing out on all the badass fiction going around, but with the exception of a few authors, there just doesn't seem to be much innovative in adult fantasy. I mean, yes, I enjoy the 'orphaned street kid comes to power' story as much as anyone else, but it's getting a little old on it's 3535th repetition.

It also seems like the protaganists in teen literature are much more compelling.

Anyone reading any good adult fantasy? Am I missing something?
