I don't know what I would do without
NJYP....in fact, it's how I got my new
job.
That's right- someone posted on the message board about their company needing someone with a statistical background. I wasn't actively looking for a job, but I was hoping to start by the end of the year. I replied, expressing casual curiousity in this anonymous company and briefly described my current position and company without giving my own company name away.
They guessed where I worked, because they are located 2 miles from my old company!! NJYP has now over 4,000 members and spans practically the entire state of NJ, and yet what a small world!
I stop by the company before my way to work for an interview.
I interview with the President!! (it's a small company)
Upon introducing himself to me, while shaking my hand, he says "I have met you before, no?"
And I am thinking this guy is nuts, because I typically remember most people i meet.
We interview, and then afterwards he says "you work with my wife, right?" He's Egyptian, so I was trying to think of someone who was also Egyptian. So I look at him puzzled, and slightly paranoid. And then he says her name, and she's someone who I knew very well. A very nice lady, who is so close to a couple of the people on the main project i was on at Mathematica that they go out to dinner with her, and visit her at home. And of course, since she had been working at Mathematica since the 80's or so, he had been to all the company parties, has met all executive people in the company, and knew exactly how the company operated through his wife.
I was hoping that the NJYP message board would also help me out with a ride home for Thanksgiving, so I met with this guy tonight to get the details. I don't think the ride will pan out, But it looks like the person will be a nice plug for my new company!! He is Director of R&D at Bristol Myers Squibb!! Maybe I will get my new company another client! BMS would be a great one :) And he is going to send me some job postings tomorrow for my friends... I love NJYP.
