If you're going with colour areas and cutting entire areas out of foamcore (ie. more than 1 pixel at a time), then I would go with wrapped since, then, the edges wouldn't contribute anything by being delineated.

As for mounting the planets: home depot (or was it Rona or Lansing?) sells plexiglass rods. You can glue it to a piece of plywood at the bottom. Many diameters. I myself like the idea of the planets being supported diagonally, it references the idea of planetary globe more. It's a LOT harder to do that, though... but, all else equal, would be nicer.

As for mounting -- I dunno about using Plexiglass, though. How do I actually mount the planetoids? I don't like the idea of running them through the rods, because then there'll be this clear hole in the bottom of them all. I don't want to just rest them on top, nor do I think they'll stay...
I don't know if it'll be terribly difficult to make an axis+holder globe design. I'm not sure it has to be round or anything. Might do it in a five piece cut or something. I'll have to look at what's available when I hit Home Depot in the near future.
