How stupid is that?

I put some sugar water on the stove to boil for the hummers.

Then I forgot it.

I now have a nice pot full of carbon bubbles, and a house full of smoke.

What I don't understand is why not one of my many smoke alarms has gone off (city required me to add one to every room when I remodeled my bathroom)-- and yes I have changed their batteries.  In March ( Read more... )

Oh my!

Maybe you could call your fire department and ask them if they have any ideas? I know the things wear out after about 10 years, or at least they used to, but yours being brand new and all... it's odd.

Glad to hear you're ok. I find I forget stuff when I'm out of the kitchen, so I _try_ to remember to set a timer and put it in my pocket.
There is probabaly a button you can poke on the fire alarms to check the batteries, assuming you can reach it.

I usually set the timer to go off. I was planning to be right there, but I stepped outside to do something and (oooh shiny)got distracted.

That happens far too often these days. I suppose I'm trying to do too many things at once. (That, or losing my mind. I try to believe it's the former, not the latter.)

Indeed! One time when I was about 27, I left a pot of eggs boiling on the stove, and left the house entirely. I remembered them about 30 miles away and came back as quickly as I could. The pot had melted, the aluminum and egg had become a heavy smoke with filled all but one room of the house. That required insurance and professional clean up. I got off easy this time. lol

Humph. You related that story before I had a chance to.

I remember there was one room in the house that had had the door closed, so we all camped out in there that night. Was it the workroom?

Nope, the parental bedroom: The only room in the house that was generally closed.
