My review of Junsu (Xia)'s live last month. Notes are my personal opinion and for my own records.
So first of all, I was sick as fuck for this concert. I probably shouldn't have gone, but I made myself do it anyway. The trip to Yokohama took a little bit of time, and I hadn't been to this venue before, but it was pretty straightforward after arriving at the station.
The goods line was nonexistent, but a few items had sold out by the time I arrived. I ended up getting the clearfile set and stainless steel tumbler, since I rationalized both of those things as useful. The penlight not so much, but hey, it looked cool.
My seat was angled towards the left side of the stage and waaaaaaaay up. Luckily I wore extra layers, since the stadium is open, but it still probably wasn't the best seat for someone bordering on a fever. XD
The concert opened with a very strange movie in which a 20-something office lady falls asleep at her desk when working late and remembers her younger self happily existing in a bedroom decked out in Junsu stuff. Touching some shiny blue item then made Junsu appear and offer the younger girl his hand. Okay, sure.
I have to say that Junsu was just incredible to see in person. His dancing is amazing, his humor is great, and he's an all-around 110% entertainer.
His MCs were also pretty cute because he frequently fumbled his Japanese or said things a little too directly. At one point he joked about us wanting to stay out too late, and that pretty girls need to think about how the night is dangerous and full of creepy guys? XD
Out of Control and Turn It Up were badass, and showed off the strength of the backup dancers too.
OeO wasn't even on my radar before the concert, and I fell in love HARD with this song and the choreography. It's catchy, builds up, and and has plenty of Junsu hip rolls. What more can you ask for?
Incredible was the only song where Junsu came out into the audience on one of those wonderful rolling contraptions. Since the dance is easy to do and the chorus is really (and wonderfully) repetitive, everyone sang along. I had a huge smile on my face at the end.
Uncommitted is one of my favorite songs, and seeing it live is something I can now cross off the list of things to do before I die. It was pretty funny though that he encouraged the audience to sing along if they knew the words, but all I heard anyone around me sing was "sa-a-aid" and "meeeeee". Since the English lyrics to that song are brilliant, I sang the whole thing. XD Because who doesn't like belting out "SHE SAID SHE COULD NEVER TRUST A PLAYER LIKE ME, BUT BABY THAT WAS PART OF MY HISTORY" at the top of their lungs?
Midnight Show was cute and very bouncy, with plenty of awesome Junsu dance moves as he tried to get a girl's attention.
F.L.P. was a lot of fun and a good song for the entire crowd to get pumped up. Lots of jumping here.
No Reason was basically pornography that made everyone around me blush to death. There are plenty of fancams online still, so I advise just searching it for your own moral enrichment. There was a bed. And gyrating. And barely clothed-female dancers. And barely-clothed male dancers. And lots of people in the audience freaking out and making high-pitched noises of disbelief.
Backseat (Jazz version) made my life. Really. For the two weeks leading up to this concert, I bothered everyone close to me also into Kpop by randomly inserting 'Backseat' as a punchline or comment in conversations. Hell, I still randomly insert it whenever I want to. BECAUSE BACKSEAT IS THE BEST. Of course he couldn't really do the choreography without the rest of JYJ, so the jazz version instead necessitated a costume change and some sultry singing while seated on a stool. Fine by me. There was also a mother and daughter in the seats right in front of me, and when he started singing this version, the mother started flailing and going "Backseatだ!!!” which totally expressed my inner feelings about it.
Flower was very powerful performed live, and had a sense of finality to it. Since the single was heavily promoted in Japan, the crowd went pretty wild. It isn't one of my favorite songs personally, though I love the choreography, and it was very impressive.
The closing movie involved the office lady and her younger self filling in a scrapbook with Junsu clippings, and then some strange conclusion with the little magical journey we'd just witnessed ending. So at the end, my only complaints were no Intoxication or Tarantellegra.
This was an incredibly long concert and a strategically planned show that displayed everything that is amazing about Junsu. I'm glad I finally got to see him live.
Backseat.
