Welp, my PS3 died. YLOD this morning, after I'd been playing Strider for about five minutes. First time I've gotten to play it in days too; Anthony's a terrible hog when it comes to the gaming systems.

The casualties? ALL our save files. Also possibly Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, which is stuck inside the machine. Maybe if I reboot the system I ( Read more... )

Man, that sucks. Yeah, no more refurb game systems. Hope you can get a new one today.

I'm in the process of taking apart the system physically to save the disc if I can. It's only a $20 game, but still might as well try. It it was one of my old, rare games, I would be screaming right now. I have some that are worth upwards of $500.

We had one refurb that lasted a month. This one lasted three years. I doubt we're going to get a new one today, or soon for that matter. Mother's Day coming up and all; really can't afford to spend money on a game system at present. Maybe afterward, depending on how far the bottle of perfume I'll need to get Mom sets me back.

I would definitely spring for the 120 gig. 60's are rapidly dying out; no guarantee you won't be seeing the YLOD within months, if not weeks, of buying one. 80's too, are getting old, and the YLOD is becoming increasingly more common among their numbers. Plus, the likelihood of you finding an unused one is low, and even if you do, the price will be high.

I wouldn't doubt the overheating played a part in the breakdown. Granted, it was an old machine but it would have lasted even longer without the abuse. Tell the kid that next time he cannot run the machine all day and night without letup. Two or three hours at most, with a minimum of 30 minutes for cooldown between sessions.

Most definitely. He has a habit of leaving the machine on while he pulls out his laptop and watches videos on Youtube, or goes to eat dinner, while he goes out, etc.

Simply put, the machine was turned on shortly after he woke up, and would be running nonstop for a good 12-16 hours a day. That's how he and his mother both are. They abuse their electronics, then complain when they just give out one day.

...personally, I'd like to think that last combo I pulled off with Hiryu was just so goddamn sweet that the machine died of awesome, but I know that's not the case.

More like it went "Oh fuck me, not Strider Hiryu again. *die*"

But yeah, dude. Set a time limit, and remind him if you need to. If you don't, he'll run the machine until its insides melt again, and you'll be out $250. Don't let him mistreat this one like he's done all the previous consoles you've owned and his laptops. Or hey; start taking the payments out of his hide. He broke it, he buys this new one. If it's his money, chances are he'll be more careful.
