Twilight: Setting back feminism by a generation.

Usually, I make icons because I find something new that I just LOVE.

This is the first time I've hated something strongly enough to make an icon about it.

Edward Cullen is an abusive boyfriend and I'm unhappy that my grade 7 girls all have a massive crush on him.

I have no idea who that is, and I'm not going to bother googling the name, but based on the evidence given I will make an educated guess that it's one of the vampires from that book/movie/whatever thing that girls seems to be all squee about these days.

That's the one. I read the first book. It's fine, until your brain wakes up. There are some good essays on the internet about how wrong and backwards it is - the female lead is a passive Mary Sue, the male lead is an abusive Gary stu, the male rival is three dimensional and interesting... until he gets involved with the female lead, when he becomes abusive. Thinking about it makes me very angry, but it's everywhere I go nowadays!

I think you're confused about something. He's a VAMPIRE, Tannis. It's okay to kill people if you're a vampire, it's their nature, just like tigers, pirates and space aliens. I don't think there's a single girl out there who doesn't squee over the aliens that play opposite Sigourney Weaver.

Oh wait, I'm confusing 12 year old girls with H.R. Giger again. I keep doing that.
