I think what annoys me about it is that it's a pretty transparent attempt to cash in on the popularity of games like God of War, which were popular here largely due to the so-called 'grimdark' factor. When really, Dante as a self-aware ham who regularly broke the fourth wall was just fine as he was.
I like games that realize perfectly well what they are, and run with that notion. Making Dante look like a strung-out meth addict with silly skunk hair and a gravelly voice pretty much just destroys everything that made that character so fun to play. Sigh.
