California is apparently implementing a requirement that all residential dwellings with a "fossil fuel burning appliance" (aka gas heaters, stoves, water heaters, etc) have carbon monoxide detectors installed. This goes into effect July 1st ( Read more... )

Typically, these sorts of things are only enforced when you're looking to do new construction or get building permits for an expansion or something, right? I mean, even if somehow it did come to the attention of enforcement officers, the state bulletin says they're supposed to give you a warning and 30 days to comply.

Oh very likely it's not actually anything that most folks need to worry about (the regulation that is...I'll leave debate on CO detectors for a different day) unless they want something to harass their landlord about.

Personally, I should probably look into it, since Shar and I are making an effort to actually move forward with the often discussed but not yet implemented kitchen remodel, which will include the replacement of my current electric stove with a gas range. I'm guessing I'll need a detector installed in the course of that work.

Huh, good to know - we put in two when we bought the house, and so are covered (and one also detects explosive gasses, because I'm mildly paranoid.) Really badly advertised though.

Indeed. I hadn't heard a peep until now, which is mildly disturbing. I like to think I'm reasonably well connected on the news front.
