Growing in my Yard! What in the world is this disgusting thing?

Found a bunch of these growing in the wood chips on the shady side of my yard this morning. At first I thought an animal had dug up some carrots and dragged them over there, but we harvested all the carrots weeks ago.

That is one strange looking growth!

I've never seen anything so gross! I had heard about these things but never encountered one before. And they develop out of weird little "eggs" in the ground. Related to puffballs, evidently.

I know, TMI.... But it was just so WEIRD, you know?

I have never seen anything like that before in my life. I was going to guess it was some kind of day-glo worm. EW.
