We “pathetic” types
I was just slogging through a truly esoteric book by Henry Corbin on the Sufi mystics (for the dissertation, not for light reading, believe me!) when I came across something that gave me an excuse to take a mini-break...
"Pathetic" comes from the same root as empathy, sympathy, and of course all of the medical "-pathies." The original Greek pathos means "passion" or "strong feeling," which leads to the (to my mind) more appealing definition of us "pathetic" QAF types as passionate. Or, given our experience with CowLip, I suppose it could be loosely translated as "long-suffering," eh?
Anyone else jazzed about the reruns of S5 that start tonight? I’m so excited I can hardly stand it!
