Blossoms in January
It's snowing here in St. Louis today, but when I went out to check the mail I noticed a wonderful fragrance in the air: our witch hazel is in full bloom. Look under the cut for some photos I couldn't resist taking.
The shrub itself is quite nondescript, but a closer look reveals what, to me, is a minor miracle!
Here is a close-up of the flowers. They're less than half an inch across, but their fragrance is powerful. You can smell the shrub from across the yard! It will be in bloom for another month, probably, depending on the weather. If it's really warm, the flowers will fade more quickly. I love this plant!
