Title: Just Like A Fairytale
The next morning, Kyungsoo went into the diner at 5AM, ready to work the whole day. It was a nice shift for a Saturday: Not too slow, not too hectic. It was enough to get a certain boy and a certain conflict off his mind. But after the lunch rush, Junmyeon tried to send him home. It was then Kyungsoo realized that Junmyeon didn’t know he was taking Kibum’s shift.
To say the least, Junmyeon was furious. His voice boomed in the small restaurant, ranting. Going on and on about how Yifan is so careless and irresponsible for an adult. It took Chanyeol and Yixing, two college students that work at the diner as well, a solid fifteen minutes to get him to calm down. Yixing told him to go outside and take a break. Junmyeon paused from his rant, something slowly dawning on him. Without any word, he walked outside. The trio watched their motherly waiter get into his car.
He didn’t return until an hour and half later, looking refreshed and happy. Kyungsoo had a feeling that Yifan got an earful from Junmyeon and would be probably nursing a swollen cheek if he wasn’t the owner.
Five o’clock rolled around and business picked up again. Kyungsoo had enough time to take a break to eat and catch up on his homework. Yixing was slowly getting overwhelmed with the number of tables he was taking care at once. Junmyeon tried to help while also taking care of the register. Leaving the high school student to work behind the counter.
It wasn’t until 6 when Kyungsoo only had a few customers left at the counter but Yixing was still running from table to table, taking orders, that the light ring of the bell was heard at the door. Kyungsoo looked up and his stomach nearly dropped.
In walked Jongin with his friends and three other girls. They slipped into the bigger booth at the back. Kyungsoo swallows inaudibly, looking down as he tries to focus on wiping down the counter. Yixing rushed up to the counter.
“Kyung-ah, can you please take that last booth. I’m just too swamped with these other tables.” Yixing pleaded. The teenager shot his head up, staring at Yixing with wide eyes.
“Yixing, I can’t-” He stopped and sigh. He’s not going to let Yixing overwork himself more than he already is just because he doesn’t want to serve his crush and some kids from his school. “Okay..”
Yixing smiled widely, leaning his full body over the counter to place a peck on Kyungsoo’s temple. “Thanks, Kyunggie. I owe you!”
Kyungsoo squirmed and pushed him away playfully. “It’s fine.”
Kyungsoo glance over at the booth, all of them staring at him. He felt flustered under their stares but took a deep breath. Pushing his glasses up with the back of his hand, straightening his back, he walked over to the table.
“Hello, I’ll be taking care of you today. Can I start you guys off with something to drink?” He said politely. Taking out his pen and his writing pad.
“Aww, look how cute diner boy is as our waiter.” Sehun cooed. “Are you wearing that tonight?” Even though he was standing and they were sitting, Kyungsoo felt small. He kept his eyes trained on the paper, not wanting to show how affected he was by Sehun’s words.
“OW! Minseok, that hurts!” He heard Sehun shout to the short male beside him.
“Serves you right.” Minseok muttered. He turned to look at Kyungsoo. “I’ll have a glass of water.”
After Sehun mumbled out a ‘coke’ and the girls replied with water, one of them looked up at him, smiling sweetly at him.
“Water.” Jongin said politely, offering him a small smile, making Kyungsoo’s stomach do flips.
“Would you like lemons with you water?” The two girls who didn’t bother to look at him, sighed irritatedly and rudely flicked their wrists, telling Kyungsoo to leave. The waiter had no choice but to obey their command. He walked off feeling something close to numb. Once he was out of earshot, Jongin glared at the two girls.
“Do you guys really have to do that?” The girls giggled, resting their chins on their palms.
“Oppa~, you don’t have a date for tonight. Who are you going with?” One of them pried. Jongin grimace.
“No one, I’m going alone.” Jongin said matter of factly. “But I do have a date. I’m just meeting them there.” Minseok and Sehun exchange looks as they raise an eyebrow at Jongin.
The two girls stared at Jongin in disbelief.
“W-who? Is she prettier than me?” One of the girls snapped.
“That’s for me to find out and you mind your own business.” Jongin smiled sweetly. The dumbfounded girls started at Jongin then suddenly they snapped. They pushed the other girl until they’re out of the booth before they storm out of the diner.
“Way to go, Jongin. Your status is going down before tonight, for sure.” The remaining girl laughed. Minseok snorted.
“Whatever, Juhyun. Like your couple costume with Bogum isn’t going to damage your status and your pride.” Juhyun rolled her eyes.
“Please, we’re going to be cute together so you can go suck it.” A phone rings, a fun girl group song playing to signal a call. Juhyun smiled widely. “Speaking of which, he’s here. See you guys at the dance.”
“Please. Juhyun, if you love the man, take him out of his misery.” Sehun called after her as she pranced to the door. She turned to the boys at the booth, sticking her tongue out before she left the diner. Kyungsoo came back, balancing a tray full of drinks.
“Oh, uh… Are you guys still eating?” He asked hesitantly, trying to cover up the disappointment in his voice. Jongin looked over the two boys next to him and shrugged.
“I’m still hungry but I’ll move to the bar stool since it’s just me or if you guys would like to join… You’re still our waiter, right?”
“Oh yeah, I actually work behind the counter tonight but uh, the waiter out here is overwhelmed and… yeah…” Kyungsoo tried to cover his relief but ended up blabbering. The three football players looked at him, amused. He hung his head in embarrassment, returning behind the counter while the trio sat down on the cushioned bar stools. Kyungsoo handed the boys their drinks and took Jongin’s order.
“So what’s this about your mystery date?” Sehun asked, side-eyeing Jongin while taking a sip of his drink. Kyungsoo froze. He wasn’t the one to eavesdrop but he couldn’t help since he was only a few feet away from the jocks.
“It’s just... I’m seeing this person that I knew for awhile now at the dance.” Jongin explained, looking at his phone, debating if he should send a message or not.
“And do we know this person?” Minseok pressed on. Jongin snorted.
“Nope, they’re too sweet and you guys will just ruin it.” Sehun raised his eyebrows.
“Now, I really want to see them. Don’t try to hide them from us, Nini. We will find them. EVEN IT’S THE LAST THING WE DO.” Sehun shouted, slamming his cup down and standing up, the whole diner going quiet. Minseok rolled his eyes.
“Come on, let’s go Sehun the Brat. Let’s leave before you get us kicked out.” Minseok grabbed Sehun’s elbow, dragging him to the door. Sehun was still facing Jongin, squinting his eyes as he held up two fingers, pointing them to his eyes than at Jongin, repeating the motion, I’m watching you. With one final tug, Sehun stumbled out the diner. Jongin rolled his eyes, shaking his head.
Kyungsoo shly set Jongin’s plate of food down. Surprise was written over Jongin’s face. Kyungsoo couldn’t help but think how cute he looks.
“Wow, that was fast.” Jongin commented.
“Yeah, Chanyeol’s cooking and he’s a fast cook. He actually just makes everything on high temperature and Junmyeon is always scared that he might set the diner on fire.” Kyungsoo laughed at the memory but realize he was rambling again. His cheeks felt warm as Jongin looked at him with the same amused look. Kyungsoo cleared his throat awkwardly. “Um, let me know if you need anything.”
“It’s Kyungsoo, isn’t?” The waiter began walking away but stopped when Jongin spoke again. He turned to face him again, shocked.
“Yeah… How do you know?” Jongin smiled, taking a bit out of his food, he pointed it to his chest with his utensil.
“Your name tag.” Kyungsoo looked down and there on his black apron in the left corner, was his tag.
“Oh..” Kyungsoo once again felt stupid for embarrassing himself in front of Jongin. The waiter hung his head, he turned to leave but, once again, was stopped by Jongin.
“Hey… about my friends and the girls.. I’m sorry on their behalf. You don’t deserve it.” Jongin tilting his head, looking the shy boy in the eyes. Kyungsoo averted his eyes, he distracted himself by restocking the napkin dispenser.
“It’s ok. My mom used to tell me, ‘My heart is big enough to love and strong enough to forgive.’” He paused before whispering, “Be kind and have courage.”
Jongin studies the boy before him, a sweet smile spread across his lips. He took another bite, chewing thoughtfully.
“With all due respect, your mom said to be kind, not a pushover.” Kyungsoo looked up and stared at Jongin, looking into his warm brown eyes. Before, Kyungsoo thought the boy was like everyone around him-cocky and self centered. Now, the black haired boy knew that it was an act, the real Kim Jongin was kind and caring, only protecting not picking.
A customer called for Kyungsoo. Just like breaking a spell, Kyungsoo blinked rapidly as he was brought back to reality. Excusing himself, he turns to help the other customers, letting Jongin eat in peace. Not realizing that Jongin’s watching him, something sentimental stirring within the pink haired boy. Jongin shook his head, focusing on his meal. Once Jongin finished his food, he called Kyungsoo over to pay.
“Well Kyungsoo, it was nice talking to you.” Jongin said, standing up while grabbing his wallet.
“You too, Jongin. Have fun at the dance tonight.” Kyungsoo smiled, reaching over to grab Jongin’s dirty dishes but was stopped when a large hand grabbed his wrist. He looked up into Jongin’s eyes again.
“I’m really sorry about everyone. I wish they can see how amazing you are.” He spoke softly, sincerity flowing from his words. “If there’s ever an opportunity for you to enjoy yourself even for a moment, please take it. You deserve to be happy.”
Jongin slowly let go of his wrist, handing him money; covering his meal and giving the black haired boy a big tip. Kyungsoo gaped at Jongin, digesting his words.
“See you around, Kyungsoo.” Jongin nodded his head goodbye. As he opens the door, Baekhyun and Jongdae walks in, both of them in their costumes. They looked like they were about to do something, probably something equally stupid and embarrassing to Kyungsoo, but stopped and gawked at Jongin. Jongin nods his head as a greeting before leaving. Both boys, still gawking, followed him with their eyes, turning their bodies. They turned to look at Kyungsoo, demanding an explanation but Baekhyun stopped himself.
“We’ll talk about.. That.” Vaguely gesturing to where Jongin was. “But not before we do our grand entrance. Jongdae and I practiced it for twenty minutes. Come on, Jongdae.” With that, a vampire and a Harry Potter exited the diner, the door moving agonizing slow as it closes - before the two burst through it.
“BEHOLD, COUNT BAEKHYUN AND JONGDAE POTTER! KNEEL AT OUR MERCY.” Baekhyun slouched over, using his cape to cover his lower face, showing his contacts, one eye red and the other white with only a small black pupil. His light brown hair messy and sprayed paint white. Jongdae was slightly leaning back, holding one arm over his head while the other one was stretched out, waving a wand, looking over his fake round glasses. Both boys stealthily glided over to where Kyungsoo was, glaring at customers that they passed. They tried to look scary and intimidating but in reality, they look ridiculous.
“Honestly, Soo, you need new friends,” Junmyeon muttered behind him. Kyungsoo couldn’t agree more. Once they made it to their embarrassed friend, they broke character.
“So?” Baekhyun raised his eyebrows, waiting for an answer.
“So?” Kyungsoo raising an eyebrow, mimicking Baekhyun.
“That was Kim Jongin.” Jongdae practically whispered like it wasn’t the most obvious fact. Kyungsoo wanted to roll his eyes.
“Yes, and?”
“And? What happened? Did you serve him? Did you guys talk?” Baekhyun pressed on, slowly getting irritated.
“He ate and he left. Nothing happened.” Kyungsoo said nonchalantly, busing the small area on the counter. Junmyeon side eyed Kyungsoo from the cash register.
“If nothing happened, well fine. Whatever, you’re meeting your mystery online lover tonight. No need to get side tracked.” Jongdae said matter of factly.
“I can’t go.” Kyungsoo said defeatedly. Both Baekhyun and Jongdae groaned, rolling their eyes.
“Yes, you can. Look, this is the one time you can meet your ‘Prince Charming’ in person and you’re making lame excuses.” Jongdae protest. Junmyeon, who was passing by behind the counter, stopped in his tracks and looked between the teenagers.
“Prince Charming? Kyungsoo, is this the boy you’ve been talking to online?” Kyungsoo opened his mouth to answer but Baekhyun was quicker. Kyungsoo rolled his eyes.
“Yes it is. They’re suppose to meet tonight for the first time. And Soo Baby is chickening out on us.” Baekhyun said, matter of factly. Kyungsoo, who went to bus a table, whipped around to face the trio, offended.
“I am NOT chickening out nor making ‘lame excuses’. I am working. Yifan asked me to take the night shift and so I am. I can’t go against my word.” Kyungsoo said, almost sternly. With that, he turned to pick up the stack of dirty plates in one hand and the cups in the other hand, walking back behind the counter.
“But you can go against your word when it comes to your online lover?” Baekhyun shot back. Jongdae and Baekhyun tried to follow but Junmyeon blocked their way, shooting a glare at the both of them. Both boys retreated back and put their hands up to mean no harm. Junmyeon turned to Kyungsoo, his gaze soft.
“Kyungsoo, if this is an opportunity to meet that boy then you need to take it.” Kyungsoo tried to protest again but Junmyeon cut him off this time.
“Don’t worry about Yifan, ok? He owes you this one night. Your life has been dedicated to pleasing his boys and him, running around with your head cut off trying to accomplish everything they throw at you.
“Tonight, don’t do it for your mystery lover, do it for yourself. You deserve to be happy and have fun for once. Tonight, you don’t have to worry about Yifan. I’ll deal with him if I have to. If you have an opportunity to be happy it. Take it.” Kyungsoo looked at the manager before looking back at his friends.
Maybe it is time to let go. Kyungsoo thinks. Letting go of all his responsibilities and just have fun. Either meeting MJJ or just dancing with his two best friends all night long, it didn’t matter to him. Like Junmyeon said, it was his night.
“Okay,” It was barely a whisper but the other three heard it. Baekhyun and Jongdae shouted and cheer, Hi-5ing each other. Junmyeon smiled wide, stretching his round cheeks wider.
“I’m happy for you, Soo.” Junmyeon said as he wrapped his arms around Kyungsoo. As Jongdae watched the two males hug, something dawned on him.
“Uh Soo, I’m glad you finally decided to go and all but, um, you don’t have a costume.” Kyungsoo pulled away from Junmyeon and stared at his friends, panic rising. He’s right. Oh, no.
However, Junmyeon seemed indifferent. “It’s okay, I know the owner of the costume store. If we hurry now, we might make it before it closes.”
From there, the four males left the diner- putting Yixing in charge for the time being- and practically speeded to the costume store. Right as they arrive there, the owner was flipping the sign over to Close.
“No, no, NO! Come on, Minho. Let us in.” Junmyeon pleaded. The man behind the closed door sighed and crossed his arms, shaking his head.
“Sorry, Myeon but the store closes at 9.” Junmyeon slumps his shoulders in defeat. Looking at Kyungsoo and his friends apologetically. As he look over the boys, an idea popped up in his head. He looked back at Minho determinedly.
“Min, I’ll give you free breakfast for a week if you let us in for 30 minutes.” Minho, who was about to turn away, stopped mid-way, contemplating on the offer given.
“A month.”
“Two weeks,” Junmyeon pleaded. The tall male tilted his head back and forth inside the store, considering the deal. After a couple of minutes, he sighed.
“Alright, come on in.” After a tiny cheer of victory, the four stumbled in to the store. Right away, they parted from each other, going into different racks and aisles, looking at different costumes.
After many trials and error, Kyungsoo began to feel hopeless. Nothing seems to fit his ideal for a costume. Of course, it doesn’t help that it was only Junmyeon, and sometimes Minho, who was helping him. Baekhyun kept looking at ridiculous costumes such as an inflatable blimpz, a chimp, and even a granny costume while Jongdae would counter back ‘sexy versions’ of the said costumes.
Junmyeon rested his arms on a glass counter, determined to find a perfect costume for the boy who was practically his son. He let his head hang, thinking of other options to find a costume in a very short time. However, his train of thought came to a halt as something caught his eye on the display in the glass counter. Sitting against black silk was a white masquerade mask.
“Minho, can I see that mask?” Junmyeon asked, idea already forming. Minho stepped behind the counter to slide the door to the side, reaching in to grab the mask, giving it to Junmyeon.
“I’m sorry, Myeon but I have nothing to go with that.” Minho said sheepishly. The waiter didn’t pay much attention to his words. Instead, he walked up to Kyungsoo, gently taking off the boy’s glasses before placing the mask over his face. The mask’s solid form molded his face perfectly. It complimented his face nicely with it’s wide and round shape, the silk polyester was the base as white lace covered it, a nice contrast from Kyungsoo’s black hair.
“But I do,” Junmyeon mumbled to himself.
A few minutes later and Kyungsoo was waiting patiently inside Junmyeon’s nice living room. Jongdae and Baekhyun waited outside in Baekhyun’s car. Kyungsoo walked around the room, examining each picture that was neatly placed on the wall, pictures of Junmyeon’s past. For all the years he has known Junmyeon, he has never been inside his house. It was nice and cozy, just like his home when he was little. A picture was set on the small table next to the couch.
Out of curiousity, Kyungsoo picked it up. It was Junmyeon, his arm slung around another man, both of them smiling wide. Junmyeon looked a lot younger in the picture, about mid twenties. Around the same age as the other man, who Kyungsoo has never seen before. However, there was something about him that felt oddly familiar. He couldn’t put his finger on it, but as Kyungsoo looked closer, he noticed that the picture was taken in front of the diner. Then it dawned on him.
“It was your father’s and my dream to open up a restaurant together, ever since we were little.” Junmyeon spoke quietly, his voice loud compared to the silence. Kyungsoo snapped his head up to see Junmyeon standing where the living room and the hallway connect, holding a big, rectangular white box. He walked over to where Kyungsoo was, setting the box on the coffee table in front of the couch before sitting down, Kyungsoo sat beside him.
“It took many years of hardship to get it standing where it is now but it was worth it.” Junmyeon gently took the picture frame, looking over it with fondness. “They say that once you accomplished one dream, you find a new dream to achieve. Once your mother came into the picture. I remember the second I looked at them together, I knew that they were perfect for each other. And I knew your father started a new dream: To start a family.
“But as the years passed by, your father became gravely ill. Your mother and I were his crutches until he was back to his full health. Which he did, and we thought everything was ok.” Junmyeon paused. His usually youthful appearance has worn down to fatigue and exhaustion, a side Kyungsoo had never seen in all his years of knowing the manager. Junmyeon sighed before continuing.
“But when your mother was pregnant with you, he became sick again. Worse than before and I just had this gut feeling that he wouldn’t recover this time and I always say that I’m right.” Junmyeon sadly chuckled, “Once he passed away, I was there for your mother and helped her through everything because that’s what your father wanted. I gave up my ownership of the diner and put the diner under her name. So she would have something of his, a big something because that’s what she deserved. And from there I had a new dream, a vow actually: To watch over the two you. I made a promise to your father that I will make sure you not only work hard at what you love but also live your life to the fullest.”
Junmyeon finally tore his gaze away from the picture and up at Kyungsoo. Bringing the older male back into the present, he straightened his posture and cleared his throat. He smiled reassuringly, restoring some of his youthfulness.
“And that’s what I’m going to do right now.” Junmyeon said more cheerfully. Putting the picture beside the box he came in with before picking up the box and setting it on his lap. The box was long enough that it was resting on Kyungsoo’s thighs as well. Junmyeon ran a hand on top of the box, before patting it. “When your parents were getting married, I helped your father look for a suit and that’s when I came across this. I saved it all these years for that one special moment. But now…. Now, I know that special moment is this.”
Kyungsoo raised an eyebrow but doesn’t say anything as he helps Junmyeon pull the lid off. His jaw drops as he looks down at the suit that is folded neatly inside the box.
“Junmyeon, it’s looks amazing.” Kyungsoo gingerly ran a hand over the fabric, feeling the smooth material underneath his fingers. The younger boy started to shake his head. “Myeon, I can’t accept this, it looks too expensive.”
“Yes, yes you can.” Junmyeon said, nodding his head. He slid the box over onto the teenager’s lap more to prove his point. “I made a promise to your father and I’m not planning on breaking it anytime soon.”
“We’re wasting time. Let’s get you ready for you shall go to the ball.” Junmyeon stood up and stretched his hand out for Kyungsoo to take. He paused again and looked over Kyungsoo’s appearance. “And let’s do something with that hair of yours.”
❇❇❇❇
“We’re here!” Jongdae clapped his hands enthusiastically as they pulled into the parking lot. “Okay, okay, okay we need a time to leave.... Soo?”
Jongdae turns around to see Kyungsoo, who had his long robe wrapped around him as he looks out the window at the building. He could see people dressed in their costumes going in, a few hanging outside. He could even faintly hear the music. His eyes widen in curiosity but also a hint of fear lingered.
“Hey.” Jongdae called softly, breaking the boy out of his trance. “This is your night, don’t worry about anything else.” Kyungsoo couldn’t help but smile a little, small words of encouragement could go a long way.
“Besides, you look hot.” Baekhyun said matter-of-factly, Jongdae nodded in agreement.
“I don’t know… It’s really different, I should put it down.” Kyungsoo leaned over so he could see his reflection in the rearview mirror. Junmyeon styled his dark hair in quiff. Kyungsoo has never showed his forehead before so he feels a little self-conscious.
“NO.” Both boys in the front shouted, making Kyungsoo jump. Jongdae reached out to grab Kyungsoo’s wrist to make sure he doesn’t touch his hair.
“Kyungsoo, you look amazing ok? Don’t think otherwise.”Jongdae said, squeezing his hand for reassurance.
“Anyways, Junmyeon says that Yifan checks in at the restaurant at 12:30 so let’s leave at midnight.” Baekhyun announce.
“Midnight? How cliché.” Kyungsoo rolled his eyes.
“Hell yeah it is. Now go get your prince Charming, Cinderella.” Baekhyun declared. Jongdae laughed as Kyungsoo glared at the vampire.
“I hate you.” He grumbled.
“You love me. Now, come on! Let's go.” With that, he exited the car, Jongdae followed shortly after, opening the door for his nervous friend in the back once he got out. Kyungsoo clutches the robe tighter and looked down at the mask in his lap.
Be kind and have courage. Have courage.
He looked up at his friends, who were smiling encouragingly, Baekhyun held out his hand for him. Taking a deep breath, he gently grabbed his mask and took Baekhyun’s hand in the other, letting Baekhyun pull him out of the car. Jongdae closed the door after him. Baekhyun took the mask, using his long fingers to expand the string connected to the mask.
Careful to not touch Kyungsoo’s hair, Baekhyun secures the mask on his friend’s face, adjusting it to make it set perfectly on his face. Once he was satisfied he took a step back, Jongdae and him looks Kyungsoo over.
“You deserve this night, Soo.” Jongdae whispered. Fixing his fake round glasses, he offers his arm dramatically, Baekhyun doing to same. Kyungsoo couldn’t help but roll his eyes but took both arms and together, they made their way to the reception hall where the dance is held. Once they enter the ballroom through the balcony, the three boys were taken aback, letting out gasps and tiny wow’s.
The ballroom itself was like a dream: Polished wood floors, the walls were painted sky blue with a light blue framing it and white edging. Two columns were placed on either side of the room and big windows all around the room evenly. Three chandeliers hang from the ceiling in the center of the room, small lights circled around it. The grand stairs was placed down the center, leading down to the dance, the stone stairs had lights underneath each step, illuminating them.
Sofa, chairs, and tables were placed along the walls for resting and refreshments. A stage was set on the far end where the DJ was stationed and a microphone stand was set in front. Speakers were set in the corners of the room. Students were scattered all over the place, everyone dressed in various costumes. Kyungsoo could spot Tao and Luhan in their male versions of Elsa and Anna costume. Jongdae patted Kyungsoo’s shoulder.
“Okay, hand over my robe. I can’t be Harry Potter without it.” Already tugging at the collar but the boy who still had it wrapped tightly around himself, shrinks away. “Stop that, you’re going to wrinkle it.” Jongdae whined.
“I’m sorry but it’s Junmyeon’s suit. I can’t get anything on it.” Kyungsoo pleaded. Baekhyun sighed.
“Kyungsoo, you are the most careful out of all of us, you won’t. Besides, I’m sure he unspokenly gave it to you.” Baekhyun countered. Jongdae snapped his fingers impatiently. Kyungsoo sagged his shoulders but reluctantly slipped the robe off and gave it to its rightful owner. As soon as Jongdae put on the robe, he smoothed out the creases that Kyungsoo had left behind.
“Look, we’re heading down to give you some time. Meet us at the bottom of the stairs.” Baekhyun continued. With that, Jongdae and Baekhyun descend down the stairs.
"Do you think he'll run?" Jongdae whispers to Baekhyun, who scoffed in reply.
"One, I have the keys. Two, if he does run, he might as well move to Europe before I find and kill him in the most painful death unknown to man." Baekhyun stated. The wizard snorted.
"You? Kill him? Please, if anything, he'll kill you.I swear, underneath the round eyes and fluffy hair is Satan himself." Both boys made it the bottom of the stairs. They looked around but noticed that everyone was looking at the top of the stairs. The two boys, confused, turned around and look up from where they came.
A bright spotlight shined down at the very top, where someone stood. Wearing a silk polyester suit, the light shone on the fabric making the person glow. Kyungsoo stood in the middle, looking over the crowd. Face hidden behind the mask. He felt self-conscious underneath everyone’s stares while in the spotlight but nethertheless, he didn't show it. Keeping his back straight and shoulders squared, he began to walk down the stairs. On the outside, he seem confident and cool but on the inside, he kept repeating to himself like a mantra Don't trip, don't trip, don't trip. Baekhyun and Jongdae watched from the side at the bottom, pride swelling in them.
"You were saying." Baekhyun mocked.
"Our Soo, all grown up to be an angel. Ah, my heartu!" Jongdae fake sobbed, clutching his wizard uniform.
Once Kyungsoo reached the bottom he looked over to his friends, not sure what to do next. Both of them beckoned him to go to the dance floor and so that's what he did. When he walked, everyone made a path for him. He felt strange. In a way, he felt superior but in another, he felt like an alien, with everyone staring at him like he’s some unknown species. Once he made it to the middle of the dance floor, he waited. This is it. This is going to be the moment he was going to meet MJJ. Every fiber in him was shaking. He carefully scanned the room, watching to see if anyone was coming towards him but all were just staring at him in awe still. He felt stupid just standing there but he didn't know what else to do. He was ready to bolt back up the stairs and-
“Espérer y courage: French for ‘hope and courage’, something to remind yourself about your mother.” A deep voice spoke behind him. Kyungsoo froze, he knew exactly who voice that belongs to but he slowly turned around to face him. There he was, standing valiantly in his authentic prince attire, his pink hair shining in the light. Kyungsoo’s mind begins to shut down.
“Kim Jongin? You’re… You’re MJJ…” Jongin laughed, eyes crinkling. Kyungsoo wanted to collapse. He never thought he would see that laugh up close, let alone because of something he said. Given, it was probably a nervous laugh but he still counts it.
“I guess my costume doesn’t hide my identity very well.” Jongin looked down at his costume before looking up. “And you are?” Jongin pressed. Kyungsoo stared at him until he remembers he’s wearing a mask to cover half of his face. He blinks rapidly and shakes his head.
“Way in over my head. I’m sorry.” Kyungsoo turns, ready to dash out of there but Jongin caught his wrist for the second time today.
“Wait, please, don’t go. I’ve waited so long to meet you. Please.” His eyes pleading, gently squeezing Kyungsoo’s wrist. He whispered, “Please don’t just look at me, see me as I am and not just as the quarterback but as the person who loves his dogs to death and accidently used nail polish as lip balm.”
Kyungsoo couldn’t help but smile fondly and remembers the conversations between them. Jongin took it as a hopeful sign so he pressed on.
“Besides, if anyone is in over their head, it’s me. You literally looked like you came down from heaven.” Jongin exaggerated. Kyungsoo laughed this time, his smiling his wide heart-shaped smile. Jongin’s breath got caught in his throat. “Wow..”
The masked boy looked up at him, startled. “What?”
Jongin shook his head. “Nothing.”
Jongin suddenly looked like he remembered something, sharply turning around before turning back to Kyungsoo, grabbing his hand.
"We should go." He said, tugging Kyungsoo's arm before adding. "Like now."
The masked male barely had time to register before he was being pulled. "Wait, what?"
"My friends..." Was all that Kyungsoo heard. It was enough for him to turn his head and spot a 'Flynn Rider' Sehun and a 'General Shang' Minseok move around the crowd to them. His eyes widen. The last thing he wanted was to be surrounded by Jongin’s friends and having the risk of one of them pulling down his mask and revealing Kyungsoo’s face to them. Catching up to Jongin's pace, he let the Prince Charming lead him through the crowd swiftly. He looked around to search for his friends, only to find the boys pushing their way through the crowd to intercept the two princes.
Jongin managed to sneak them out of the building through a back exit. Kyungsoo couldn't help but giggle as they slowed down to a more comfortable walking pace along the path, still holding hands.
"So this is how your life actually is? Running away from your friends?" Kyungsoo laughs, playfully nudging Jongin's shoulder. Jongin chuckles, looking down at their clasped hands.
"I try. I guess tonight is my lucky night." Looking down at the Kyungsoo, a playful smirk dances across Jongin’s lips. "In more ways than one."
The masked boy shook his head, rolling his eyes. "We'll see," he teased.
They wander along the path, passing colorful gardens and hedges that raised well over their heads. They made small talk as they went along, laughing over their dumb jokes and comment on the beautiful scenery they pass. Their fingers found themselves intertwined with each other’s. It felt more natural than Kyungsoo could ever imagine, their conversation flowed easy as it blended into different topics.
"Come on, I want to show you something." Jongin said after a few minutes of walking, tugging on their joined hands again. Kyungsoo let the boy dressed as a Prince lead him down the path until he stopped and turned to the hedge on the left. Puzzled, the masked boy turned to look up at Jongin, who laughed in return. He reached out his hand and gently reached inside the hedge. The boy beside him watched as it swayed to the touch as Jongin easily pushed it to the side. The curtain of vines revealed a secluded area. In the center of the hidden spot was a white gazebo, lights twirled and white flowers decorated around the ledges. The entrance of the gazebo faced them. Kyungsoo stared in awe and wonder as they walked up to it. He cautiously stepped inside the wooden structure, tracing the edge of the top with his eyes. Jongin followed him along outside the gazebo, watching the other boy walking around inside, his eyes lighting up.
"How did you know this was here?" Kyungsoo asked, still observing the bright and vivid flowers that twisted and curved around the wood.
"I came here a lot as a child. It's used for smaller wedding ceremonies but since bigger weddings usually book here, it was mostly used for my hiding spot. A place to escape the world," Jongin explained, stepping inside the gazebo with his date. He looked over the place with admiration and fond memories. "You're the only person I showed this place to. The others... wouldn't appreciate it as you do."
"I wish I had a place like this." Kyungsoo said absentmindedly, leaning on his hands as he leaned over to look up at the night sky. He turned to face Jongin who was still leaning against the frame of the entrance. "Thank you for showing me this. You know a lot about this place."
The other boy chuckled, somewhat bitterly. "For it being my parent's biggest pride and joy, I should know, shouldn’t I?" Kyungsoo's eyes widen underneath his mask.
"Your parents own this hotel?" Looking over Jongin, Kyungsoo couldn't help but laugh and shake his head. "I guess your prince costume is more accurate than one would think-a prince and his kingdom."
He stopped before looking back at the prince, serious again but with a hint of pity.
"I guess that means you haven't told your dad about wanting to be a dancer," he said quietly. Jongin gave him a tight smile before walking along the railing, tracing it with his palm.
"He has it all set out for me. Football then taking over the family business. It sounds perfect, right?" Kyungsoo gave him a small, comforting smile. Maybe wearing a mask gave him fake confidence to hide behind or maybe it was just for tonight that made him bold. Whatever it was, Kyungsoo found himself walking up to the pink haired prince who was suddenly focusing on a vine of flowers. The masked boy reached up to tilt Jongin's head down and held eye contact with him.
"Only if it sounds perfect to you." Kyungsoo merely whispered. Jongin leaned into Kyungsoo’s palm, staring deep into the masked boy’s eyes. He brought up his own hand to cover Kyungsoo’s hand that’s cradling his face, intertwining their fingers together. Jongin pulled their hands away from his face, instantly missing the warmth.
“What sounds perfect to me is just forgetting about everything for tonight.” Jongin responded. “Would you like to dance with me?”
Kyungsoo snorted. “We don’t have music.”
Jongin’s face lit up for a second, remember something as he digs his hand inside his navy blue colonial military jacket. A couple of seconds later, he brought out his phone, smiling broadly.
“Don’t worry, it can’t be any worse than what they’re playing in there.” Jongin joked, unlocking his phone and scrolling through his music. Once music started to play, quiet enough settle in the background. Jongin started to walk backwards to the center of the pavilion, pulling Kyungsoo along. “What do you say?”
“I’ll be honored to.” Kyungsoo smiled. One of his hand still linked with Jongin’s, he rest the other one on Jongin’s shoulder. In return, the pink haired Prince Charming rest his hand on Kyungsoo’s waist, pulling them closer until their chests were pressed together. The masked boy looked up to Jongin, waiting for his signal. With a big breath Jongin started moving, stepping in time to the slow song, guiding Kyungsoo along with him. Kyungsoo felt like he was floating as both boys glided together around the gazebo.
The songs blended in one another as they continue to dance. At one point, Jongin decided to spin Kyungsoo by surprise. Resulting Kyungsoo to glare at him, which caused the Prince Charming to laugh out loud. But in return, Jongin bent his knees awkwardly to duck underneath their linked arms. Kyungsoo rolled his eyes at him but laughed wholeheartedly. After awhile, they stopped dancing and just swayed in the middle. Kyungsoo rested his head on Jongin’s shoulder comfortably, watching the scene around them as they slowly turned. Jongin gently nudged his head with his own. The masked boy lifted his head and looked up at Jongin, realizing how close they were to each other.
They stopped swaying, and just stared at each other, anticipating who will make the first move. It was Jongin that moved, slowly leaning forward. Kyungsoo fluttered his eyes close as he felt Jongin’s breath against his lips. He waited and waited.
But he didn’t feel Jongin’s lips on his.
Instead, he feels Jongin moving his arms. He felt big hands cup his face. They were nice, warm and rough against his skin. But Kyungsoo felt Jongin’s thumbs trail across his cheeks until they slipped underneath his mask on both side of his face. Kyungsoo’s eye shot wide open, panic rising, understanding what Jongin’s intentions are. Once he was about to grab Jongin’s wrists to stop him, he froze when he looked into Jongin’s eyes. They were soft and almost pleading. Kyungsoo melted a bit, finding comfort in his eyes.
Seeing Kyungsoo relaxed a little, Jongin continued, gently curling his fingers over the mask. Kyungsoo close his eyes again, too scared to look at Jongin’s reaction when he takes the mask off. Jongin’s fingers graze his cheeks. He feels the mask slowly being lifted off his face. He squeeze his eyes tight. Painstaking slow, the mask began to shift up-
“Touch my body~” Kyungsoo’s ringtone blasted through the tension. Kyungsoo, again, shot his eyes open, staring at a shocked Jongin. His whole body felt flushed from embarrassment.
“Is that Sistar?” Jongin asked, letting go of his mask completely.
“Yeah… My friend’s obsessed with girl groups, he’s really embarrassing about it too. He set this as my alarm just to mess with me. I always forget to change it.” Kyungsoo mumbled, frantically searching in his pant pockets to get his phone to dismiss the alarm. Finally getting his phone out of the tight pockets and cutting off the summer pop song. He adjusted his mask before looking back up at Jongin. The Prince Charming looked back with furrowed eyebrows.
“Alarm? What for?” Jongin asked. Kyungsoo tried to calm down his racing heart and focus on Jongin’s question.
It’s midnight… Midnight…. MIDNIGHT, OH NO!
“Oh god, Jongin. I have to go.” Kyungsoo tore away from Jongin, stumbling backwards to the exit.
“What. Why? Do you have a curfew or something?” Jongin blinked rapidly, barely comprehending the sudden change in Kyungsoo. The masked boy was now at the curtain of vines, he turned to look back at Jongin.
“Sorta. Listen, tonight has been, without a doubt, the best night of my life. I couldn’t have asked for more. Everything was perfect. Thank you.” Kyungsoo spoke fast, rushing out what’s on his mind before he could forget. He pushed the vines aside, about to leave before Jongin spoke again.
“Wait. Where are you going?” Jongin asked, taking a step towards him, still stunned from the sudden turn of events. Kyungsoo turned back to him, racking his brain for a response. A sad smile tugged on his heart-shaped lips.
“Back to reality.” With that, Kyungsoo ducked out of the secret garden, running at full speed towards where they came from, leaving a dumbfounded Jongin behind. The prince chuckled, shaking his head in disbelief until he realized that he had so much left to say to the masked boy and still doesn't know who is under that mask.
“Wait, come back. I still have so much to tell you. Wait!” breaking out of his frozen mind, running after him.
Kyungsoo was already at the door that lead back into the dance when he heard Jongin shout after him. Panic rising inside him, he whipped the doors open and bolted inside. The dance was still packed and loud, a contrast from Kyungsoo’s time with Jongin-quiet and alone. He moved around in the sea of dancing bodies, trying to find a glimpse of his friends. Looking back every now and then, making sure he doesn’t see Jongin, accidently bumping into people when he does. He bowed and apologize profusely but continued to search for his friends. He looked down at his phone to see Baekhyun was calling him. He answered immediately.
“Baek?” He shouted into the phone, trying to be heard over the music. Pressing his phone over his ears and pressing his fingers against the other, trying to hear what Baekhyun was saying.
“Kyungsoo, where are you?!” Baekhyun’s voice muffled through his phone’s speakers. Kyungsoo twist his body around, taking in his surroundings.
“I’m in the middle of the dance floor and- oh god.” Kyungsoo stopped, eyes widening. In the back corner of the dance floor , he could see Jongin, with Sehun and Minseok. Kyungsoo could see them talking but looking around, none of them has spotted him yet.
“What? What is it?-Wait. Nevermind, meet Jongdae and I at the bottom of the stairs. NOW!” Without wasting time, he bolted towards the stairs, away from the trio. Getting closer to the stairs, he recognized the two figures lingering at the bottom. Jongdae spotted him first.
“Soo! How did things go? Who’s your mystery online lover? Tell us everything!” The boy dressed as Harry Potter gushed. Baekhyun glared at Jongdae before rolling his eyes.
“He can tell us later, right now we have to go. Like, now.” The vampire grabbed Jongdae’s sleeves, pulling him up the stairs. Kyungsoo a couple of steps behind. Once they got to the top, Jongdae looked over his shoulder and suddenly stopped. Causing Kyungsoo to crash into him, making him drop his phone in the process.
“Jongdae, what are you doing?” Kyungsoo yelled, hastily picking up his phone. The boy as the wizard gasped.
“KIM JONGIN IS YOUR ONLINE LOVE?!” He screamed, to his friends’ misery, right into their ears.
“WHAT?!” Baekhyun shouted, causing both boys to turn around. Just as Kyungsoo has anticipated, Jongin moving through the crowd, rapidly getting closer to the stairs with Sehun and Minseok tailing behind. Kyungsoo pushed both boys to move again.
“Guys, come on! We’re wasting time.” Snapping both boys out of their stares, they begin running again.
“Oh my god, it makes sense now. Why Sehun and Minseok tried to get you earlier.” Jongdae gasped, breathing heavily from running.
“You two didn’t see him when I met him out on the dance floor?” Kyungsoo asked, curiosity getting the best of him.
“We only saw his costume and to be fair, his hair looked blonde in the light.” Baekhyun defened. They made it to the front entrance, Kyungsoo suddenly stopped on the front steps and looked back.
There was no sign of Jongin or his friends. Maybe it was the adrenaline or ‘it felt right’ but on an impulse, Kyungsoo pulled off his mask and set it on the top of the stairs. He couldn’t stop grinning wide and he descend the stairs and ran across the big lawn after his friends. He still felt wired when he slipped into the backseat of Baekhyun’s car that he couldn’t help but laugh obnoxiously. Shaking his hands to calm down.
“Soo, talk. What happened?” Jongdae said, twisting his whole body around to face Kyungsoo in the back as Baekhyun backed up the car and turned to leave the place.
“Look, as much as I want to hear it too, we have to get to the diner.” Baekhyun said but quickly added. “Kyungsoo, you’ll tell us tomorrow and you are not leaving any detail out, you hear me?”
Kyungsoo didn’t answer as he crouched down as he peeked at the entrance of the hotel through the back window. He could make out the three figures at the front entrance of the hotel, Kyungsoo could tell the middle of the three was Jongin as the prince bend down to pick up his mask. Kyungsoo smiled, glad that Jongin got his mask. Once he couldn’t see the three boys anymore, he turned back around to face his two friends in the front seats. He scooched over to the middle seat and leaned forward in between the two seats.
“I can’t thank you guys enough for convincing me to go.” Kyungsoo said, his cheeks started to hurt from smiling so much.
“You see. I told you.” Baekhyun said in his know-it-all voice, keeping his eyes trained on the road as the car came to the stop at a red light. He turn to face Kyungsoo to continue tell off Kyungsoo but stopped once he looked over to the car right next to them. Jongdae and Kyungsoo followed his gaze only to have their own eyes almost pop out and their heart momentarily stop when they see the side profile of Wu Yifan in the driver seat. Just to their luck, both of their windows were down.
In the next second, Kyungsoo threw himself back and down in the back seat, both Baekhyun and Jongdae flail their arms arounds, pushing Kyungsoo in his hiding spot. Just in time before Yifan turned his head towards the commotion. The vampire and the boy as Harry Potter smiled too wide to be natural as they try to look as nonchalant as possible.
“He-Hey, Wu-ssi.” Baekhyun stuttered, his voice pitched and almost cracking. Jongdae nervously waved. “What are you doing here?”
To answer his question, both Luhan and Tao leaned forward from the front seat, none of them catching on to their weird attitude, if they did, they ignored it. Luhan smiled brightly.
“Hi Baekhyun, Jongdae. Your guys’ costumes look amazing.” He complimented.
“Where’re you guys going? The dance doesn’t end for another hour.” Tao said, frowning slightly and eyebrows scrunched in confusion.
“To the diner.” Jongdae blurted out before he could stop himself. Kyungsoo punched Jongdae’s seat, making him jolt. “You-You know, we’ve been dancing all night, so much that we starved ourselves so we decided to you know, why not see Kyungsoo-I mean, eat before we head home. Good thing, Do’s Diner is open 24/7. Which you already know since you’re the owner of the diner.”
Kyungsoo punched Jongdae’s seat again as Baekhyun glared at him, trying to shut him up. Yifan raised his eyebrow at them.
“Oh, we’re going to the diner too.” Luhan eyes lit up.
“No way!” Baekhyun faked surprise. “How funny is that.” Kyungsoo cringed at how painfully obvious both boys were being. Thankfully, to put them out of their misery, the light turned green. As Yifan turned right, Tao shouted out ‘Race you there!’, Baekhyun driving forward. The driver repeatedly smacked Jongdae.
“Nice. Going. You. Idiot.” Baekhyun punctured each word with a punch. Jongdae tried to block each punch but failed miserably when Kyungsoo joined in.
“I’m sorry I got nervous.” Jongdae protested, his voice dipping in a almost whimper. The vampire rolled his eyes.
“Kyungsoo, your clothes are back there, you need to change back there.” Baekhyun instructed.
“Well hurry. Thanks to you, you took the longer way.” Kyungsoo glared at him, shrugging off his jacket.
“I’m trying here.” Baekhyun half shouted, increasing the speed. Kyungsoo braced himself when Baekhyun turned too sharply so he won’t lose his balance. The trio was quiet as they concentrated on their task at hand before Jongdae spoke up again.
“Why were Luhan and Tao both in the front seat?” Earning another punch from both boys.

Junmyeon nervously paced around, glancing at the clock for what felt like every two seconds, nervously chewing on the his thumb nail. Seokjin, the cook for the night, watched him from behind the counter.
“I’m sure they will get here before Yifan. Kyungsoo is more responsible than that. Maybe you should sit down and drink some water. You’re stressing yourself out.” Seokjin reasoned. Junmyeon stopped and sighed.
“You’re right.” Junmyeon agreed, sitting down on a stool. The manager rested his elbows on the counter as he rubbed his face with both hands. He heard the doorbell ring when the door opened, Junmyeon perked up, smiling wide, already assuming it was Kyungsoo and even his friends. However, his face fell when he saw who it was instead.
“Yifan,” He began, heartbeat picking up a few paces. Yifan looked around the diner, eyebrows furrowing. His sons behind him plopped down in a empty booth.
“Where’s Kyungsoo?” The tall Chinese man asked. Junmyeon opened his mouth to respond but before he could the doorbell ringed again. Baekhyun and Jongdae came stumbling in. Luhan jumped up.
“Ha! We won.” He cheered, high fiving his brother. Baekhyun fought the urge to roll his eyes as Jongdae forced a smile.
“Oh darn, well we could’ve won if Baekkie here didn’t take the long route.” The Harry Potter played along. Tao shrugged.
“I highly doubt that.” He said, fixing his Elsa cape.
“Where’s Kyungsoo?” Yifan repeated again. This time Seokjin approached the owner with a plate of cookies.
“Excuse me, sir. But Junmyeon hyung and I are working on a new cookie recipe and we want you to try it and maybe we can sell it to customers.” He asked shyly, the manager nodded in support.
“Yes! And about earlier today, I was out of line. I mean, I still stand about letting Kyungsoo have a break but I shouldn’t-” Yifan held up his hand to stop Junmyeon.
“Junmyeon, please. Not now. I know what you mean and I appreciate your concern. Now where’s Kyungsoo?” Yifan asked, his voice rough and demanding. The manager looked at Baekhyun and Jongdae before looking back up at Yifan. Tension building as Junmyeon’s mind was racing for an excuse.
A light ding cut through the strain atmosphere.
“Order up!” Kyungsoo sang. All seven heads turn to the kitchen window behind the counter where Kyungsoo was inside, placing a plate of food on the wide ledge. He smiled brightly at everyone as he pushed through the swing door and stepped out in the employee area, wearing his waiter apron and regular work clothes underneath. Yifan looked at him dumbfoundedly.
“Kyungsoo, why were back there? And why didn’t you hear me?” Yifan blinked at him.
“Oh, I decided that this would be a perfect time to work on my cooking skills, since there will be less customers. And I’m sorry, I couldn’t hear you over the dishwasher and the stove.” Kyungsoo apologized.
“Soo, your food is already delicious, you don’t need to improve.” Luhan reassured.
“Everyone could always expand their knowledge skills.” Tao shrugged. Yifan blinked before he cleared his throat.
“Well, um, you can go home with us now.” Everyone except Luhan and Tao looked taken aback, blinking and gaping at Yifan. The Chinese man hesitantly step forward, towards Kyungsoo.
“I was insensitive to your schedule and made you work almost twentyfour hours, I apologize. Please, you must be exhausted, let me take you home.” Stretching his arm out towards the teenager. But tense for second, turning to Junmyeon. “If it’s not too much of a trouble to you.”
Kyungsoo still looked at Yifan, shocked. Yifan never offered him to leave his shift early, nor offer him a ride. Of course, Kyungsoo had his own car, not as glamorous as Yifan’s, or as glamorous as an average car, but it still runs. The raven haired boy stood there, conflicted. He was tired from today but he didn’t want to leave Junmyeon or Seokjin incase something happened and they needed him. He looked at Junmyeon for help but the manager was still looking at the tall male. Junmyeon’s eyes were still wide from shock but they mellowed down to admirable and gratitude for the owner. A soft smile spread across his small lips, he faced Kyungsoo, giving him a slight nod.
“Jin and I can handle it from here, go.” Junmyeon assured him. The black haired teen look back at Yifan, who’s arm is still stretched out to him. He whispered a soft ‘okay’ as he walked around the counter and towards his step father. Yifan had his hand awkwardly hover over Kyungsoo’s shoulder but at the last minute, let it fall to his sides and follow Kyungsoo towards the door. Luhan and Tao followed in step, Luhan looping his arm around Kyungsoo’s and Tao’s. As they passed Baekhyun and Jongdae, who waved Kyungsoo goodbye and said they will call tomorrow. Yifan stopped and turned to Junmyeon.
“Um,” He cleared his throat again and pointed at Baekhyun and Jongdae. “Whatever they have, I’ll cover it.”
For the second time, Baekhyun and Jongdae were taken aback by Yifan’s action. Jongdae let out a disbelief laugh and smiled wide.
“Thanks, Wu-ssi.” Jumping into an open booth, Baekhyun glared at him. Jongdae muttered, “What? It’s free food.”
Once they were right at the door, Luhan jolted, stopping in his tracks as he remembers something.
“Oh Baekhyun, Jongdae. Do you guys know who the masked boy that ran off with Kim Jongin is?” Both boys froze and Kyungsoo involuntarily tensed but immediately relaxed before Luhan could notice. However, the action caught Yifan’s attention, raising his eyebrow but didn’t say anything.
Jongdae looked at Baekhyun, panicking. Baekhyun, nonchalantly shrugged his shoulders, his lips pulling down into a frown.
“No clue.”
