❊ a/n: sending my thanks to to mods for holding this exchange and allowing me an extension when i needed it! to my wonderful recipient, last minute changed of plans so i appologize for how the story turned out and it probably isnt even anywhere close to your prompts. this wasnt actually what i wanted to write, having initially picked out another prompt which really caught my eyes and even planning it out from start to end and writing it too, but writer’s block sucks and resulted in me having to write this instead. nevertheless, thanks for the amazing prompts and i hope you at least enjoy this!
It’s getting bad again, he thinks to himself, fingers wrapped around the metallic pen, tapping it repeatedly on the mahogany table as his eyes roams his surroundings. He’s searching for someone again. That someone tall with sun kissed skin, dark brown eyes and chocolate hair; he’s memorized it all. From the way his face lights up, dimple becoming prominent when he throws a shy smile towards the cashier lady who ravishes him in compliments of being too handsome for his well being, to wearing a handsome stoic face when his friends teases him in front of hundreds of people, he’s engraved every little thing about said guy into his brain...and heart.
He hasn’t forgotten. He still remember and knows everything there is to know about said male by the name of Kim Jongin.
“Hey Kyungsoo,” a tender voice calls out his name, waking him from his trance.
Kyungsoo stops tapping his pen, placing down onto the table as he looks up to find the owner of the voice and smiles weakly. “Hey Jongin,” he greets back as he watches the younger male takes the seat across from him, giving him a warm smile. Kyungsoo continues to stare at Jongin as he watches the younger one reaches across the table for his styrofoam cup, taking it into his hand to take a sip out of it before making a disgusted face in response to what he thinks of the beverage. Kyungsoo chuckles as the younger slides the cup back towards him.
“That was disgusting,” the younger says. “Coffee is disgusting. Why do you like it so much?”
The elder only hums in response as he smiles in amusement. Like? Kyungsoo wouldn’t really say that was it. He was never really fond of coffee nor did he have any dislike of them, but if they were his serotonin and allow him to be hyperactive until after noon before he deflates like a balloon being released of air, then by all means he wasn’t going to stop drinking coffee. He also get this strange satisfaction in restroom visitation for extreme relief after drinking an excessive amount of coffee for the day, don’t ask why, even he himself doesn’t know, so he definitely wasn’t going to stop. But also, maybe his tolerance for coffee was what made him so different from Jongin.
Jongin clears his throat, waking Kyungsoo from his trance once more. “So?”
“So what?” Kyungsoo ask back confusingly.
“Are you doing anything tonight Kyungsoo? Because if not I was wondering if you were going to come to the party tonight. The gang hasn’t really been the same without you these days and it’s feel like we haven’t seen you in ages...which I mean we honestly haven’t really but...you know what I mean.”
Oh the wonderful gang, Kyungsoo thinks to himself as he begins shaking his legs underneath the table. Truth be told, Kyungsoo wasn’t even suppose to be here, much less talking to Jongin in the first place.
Decline, he tells himself. Decline it.
“I can’t promise you anything right now but I’ll see if my schedule is cleared up tonight,” Kyungsoo tells the latter, giving him the same weak smile, standing up as he takes his styrofoam cup into his right hand. “But I have to get going. I’ll see you later, around or something.”
“Oh,” Jongin mumbles quietly as he watches Kyungsoo rushes out the coffee shop. He lets out a sigh as the petite male’s figure disappears from view.
-
He doesn’t know what has come over him but here he is standing in front of Jongin’s door, hands raise as he’s about to knock on it, only to have a flung opened with sun-kissed man hovering over him and smiling in his direction.
“Hey, I’m glad you could make it.” A soft voice greets him as he steps away to let Kyungsoo inside the house. Kyungsoo doesn’t say anything as he greets Jongin back with a smile. He passes the kitchen he’s known so well, trudging towards the living room and freezes in his steps when he hear familiar voices in the distance. Jongin walks up to Kyungsoo and looks down at the elder male, lips pouting as he looks at the latter in confusion.
“Are you okay, hyung?”
Kyungsoo’s face suddenly shot up at what Jongin is addressing him as, a word of familiarity that’s been too long gone between the two, and makes a weak sound, eyes glistening as he stares at the younger male.
“It’s going to be okay.” Jongin smiles in return and grabs Kyungsoo’s hand and pulls him along into the living room, interrupting the rowdy air with the entrance of them both. “Hey guys, look who made it.”
Everyone stops in the midst of the ruckus and turns around, looking at the two. Kyungsoo looks at everyone and felt so small at the moment. He was never really one who liked attention anyways. Kyungsoo’s eyes accidentally land on someone he should have known better in seeing here today and he quickly works his hand out of Jongin’s hold.
“Hey,” Kyungsoo says as he raises his hand up to greet everyone.
Baekhyun is the first one to make teary eyes towards Kyungsoo’s way and runs up to the latter, embracing him into a hug as he wraps his arms around the latter’s waist and wails “Kyungsoo” out loud. Everyone else soon follows and begins to envelope the petite male in a hug as Jongin stands by the side and watches.
“What have you been doing all these years?” Baekhyun asks as he lays his head on Kyungsoo’s shoulder, looking up at Kyungsoo as his arms are locked with the latter’s.
Chanyeol sits across from the two and roll his eyes in annoyance at his boyfriend. “Years? Kyungsoo’s only been gone for like two years. You make it seem like he’s been away for ten years. And what are you going on about? You’ve been in contact with him since the day his disappeared anyways.”
“So!” Baekhyun snaps back at the younger male, sticking his tongue out. “And that’s still years! You’re just angry I’d rather spend my quality time with Kyungsoo right now than with you.”
“Whatever,” Chanyeol mumbles as he angrily drinks from the cup in his hand as Kyungsoo chuckles. Some things never really do change.
“Contract work,” the petite male replies in response. “I could never really find what I wanted to do or no definite place really interested me so I jumped around doing two to three months on site contract work in multiple enterprises. But now I’m back here.”
Joonmyun nods his head and gets up to pat Kyungsoo on the shoulder that Baekhyun isn’t currently occupying as he heads into the kitchen. Kyungsoo sighs a breath he didn’t know he was holding and watches as everyone sympathetically comforts him. The comfort Kyungsoo honestly didn’t even need or know why they were giving him, feeling pity for him. But he was still thankful nonetheless that they were understanding of his choice and decision.
Kyungsoo sits there and watches as the gang goes on and about with their usual routine at a gathering as Baekhyun breaks himself away from him and goes back to his boyfriend, trying to sweet and cheer up his boyfriend who was now pissed off. Joonmyun is now chatting away with Yixing, engaging them both in a political argument Kyungsoo would rather not have no interest in. Minseok is yelling at Jongdae who is teasing the elder.
The petite male hums in response when he spots two people he did not know he was looking for standing behind the kitchen island, laughing among themselves as they are getting snacks and drinks ready. The male with sun kiss skin in the kitchen looks up at Kyungsoo and smiles, motioning for Kyungsoo to come and help them.
“Yes?” Kyungsoo inquires as both of them looks up at him and hands him two bowls, one each.
“Hey, do you mind bringing this over into the living room?” Jongin asks the petite male.
“Not at all,” Kyungsoo says as he takes them in his hand and walks away.
Sehun continues to look at Kyungsoo’s back and then looks over to Jongin. “You know it was entirely your fault and you should just tell him. How long are you going to keep this up.”
Jongin leaves Sehun’s question hanging as he stands there quietly watching Kyungsoo from afar.

He stands in front corridors leading to the arts department, feet not moving to go in or to leave. There are heavy feelings subsiding in his chest as he stands there, letting any memories that have been long subdue come crawling back into his mind, into his heart. Kyungsoo can still remember the first day he came walking through these doors, a little too happy, face full of youth and light as a smile stretches wide across his face, knowing this was where he’d belong for the next four years, where he would make his friends, where he would live his life, where he would find the real him.
Someone walks out of the corridors and wakes Kyungsoo from his stupor when they smile and greet him. Kyungsoo is taken aback by who it is before returning the same gesture.
“Kyungsoo?” A raspy voice asks, surprised seeing the male here. “What are you doing here?”
“Ahh,” Kyungsoo begins.
“If you’re here to meet Jongin, he’s actually out for a little bit and won’t come back here until around noon.” Sehun interjects.
“No, I’m actually not here to meet him...I was making my way towards the health department and just so happen to pass by. I’m not sure what got into me and stopped in my tracks.” He quickly says, laughing as he turns on his heels to run away.
“Wait!” Sehun shouts as he grabs onto the sleeve of his shirt. “You know it’s not your fault right?”
“I know,” Kyungsoo says as he breaks free from Sehun’s hold and flees the site. Sehun watches the elder’s retreating back and sighs tediously.
Of course it wasn’t his fault. Kyungsoo knew that better than anyone, but even if they wasn’t his fault, things worked out better for everyone, for the two of them, if it was under that impression. Kyungsoo was doing better now anyways.
“Are you sure you’re doing better?” Baekhyun asks frowning at Kyungsoo who was voicing out his thoughts.
“I swear I am,” the younger male says fixing his glasses as he fills out his paperwork.
The two of them were in the health department of the college they graduated from. Kyungsoo who was starting anew on an accountant position thanks to the recommendation of Baekhyun, even if this was a temporary job position. He was already hopping back and forth between contract jobs in accounting anyways, it wasn’t a big deal to Kyungsoo since he was doing a considerably large amount of accounting from home since he mostly did freelance jobs anyways, which was more convenient to him.
“Yeah, sure.” Baekhyun replied back as he wrote something down on a notepad and slapped it down in front of Kyungsoo.
“What is this?” Kyungsoo looks up from his paperwork as he sees the green sticky note with a phone number on it.
“It’s his phone number. I know you want it. You and him should just resolve your misunderstanding, it’s annoying.”
“There’s no misunderstanding between us.” Kyungsoo states. “And why are you trying to tell me to meet him again? We literally just met the other day because of you, against my own will. And before you say I had a choice in not going, it would have been rude if I didn’t go, and I even went to the party last night too. So I think this is enough.”
Baekhyun crosses his arm and leans back in his computer chair, murmuring something about how ungrateful people are these days.
“Yeah, I know how ungrateful I am.” Kyungsoo responds back to his friend as he hands the paper to him. “Anyways, I’m done with my paperwork so I’m leaving now. I don’t even know why I had to get here at such an ungodly hour, but I think I’ve been on campus long enough, I’m leaving.”
Baekhyun waves his hand as he tells Kyungsoo to leave, peeling the green sticky note off the paper and slaps it onto Kyungsoo’s hand. “For your convenience whether you like it or not.”
Kyungsoo rolls his eyes and doesn’t fight back. Whatever.
Kyungsoo walks out of the building and slows his walking pace down as he approaches the arts building again, fighting every muscle in his body to not stop in his walk. However, fate has other plans for him. Kyungsoo ceases walking when he sees someone tall and lean standing in front, blocking his way.
“I’m sorry,” Jongin begins grabbing a hold of Kyungsoo wrist and pulls him along inside the arts department, dragging the shorter male behind him.
“What are you doing?” Kyungsoo shouts angrily as he tries to pull himself from Jongin’s hold as the rush through the hallways of the building, nothing has really changed since Kyungsoo was last walking through these walls and drags him into the recording room, closing the door shut and locking it. He doesn’t let Kyungsoo escape as he stands in front guarding the door.
“What the heck?” Kyungsoo yells again. “Jongin move, I need to leave!”
“It was all my fault!” Jongin yell back at the elder as he rushes to envelopes the petite male in a hug.
“Because I’ve always wanted to impress you. You were always smart and knew what you wanted to do in life. You’ve always had a goal set out for yourself and the way you lit up whenever you talked about it, going on about it, I was always envious, even jealous of it. Because you knew where you wanted to be, and I’ve always admired that about you. I’ve always wanted to catch your attention, keep your eyes only on me. Because I’ve always had a crush on you and liked you. And did my best so that I could become someone just like you. I practiced dancing and studied so you would noticed me and I suppose it did work. But I never imagined how things would turn out.”
“I never wanted you to fall into my shadow. I never wanted to be number one and push you down. I never wanted to win the scholarship in the first place.” Jongin says regretfully as he hugs Kyungsoo tighter. “I never wanted you to stop chasing your dreams...I never wanted you to quit singing, hyung. Just, come back, please?”
Kyungsoo breathes into Jongin’s chest before the latter let’s go and looks up to meet Jongin’s eyes, reaching out to ruffle the latter’s hair. “I’m not going to lie that it wasn’t your fault Jongin. But your ambitions to impress allowed you to discover who you wanted to become, what you wanted to do. So more than anything, stop blaming yourself for what has happened. Things happens for a reason, call it fate or something like that. And I’m happy for you, and for myself. I didn’t quit seeking a degree in singing because of you. I did it because this was the best choice for me. Singing should just stay as a hobby for me. Which is why I don’t understand why everyone seem to think and assume that I don’t like accounting when I really do. I keep telling you guys I’d rather stick to freelance work since it’s more convenient for me.”
“And as much as I love singing, I’m not sure how enthusiastic someone who’s nearing twenty-six feels about going back to school to get a degree in vocal performance.” Kyungsoo says as he smiles, pulling the younger male down to his height level and whispers into Jongin’s left ear. “Plus, I make more money as an accountant.”
Kyungsoo backs away and laughs as Jongin whose jaw drops at that statement. “I thought you’ve always wanted to major in vocal performance not for the money but because you have the passion for it and wanted to be a teacher?”
The petite male shrugs and replies back cheekily, “I have the passion for it but when you make two times the amount you can as a music teacher, not anymore.”
Jongin laughs and grabs Kyungsoo’s hand and holds it tight, opening the door to leave the recording studio, pulling the latter out with him. “Then I guess you’re going to have to support both of us.”
“What?” Kyungsoo questions back.
Jongin’s lips curved upward and a smirk is place on his face before he tilts his head down towards Kyungsoo’s, capturing the others lips with his own.
