Why do people lie?

Ok, maybe I am entirely too trusting.  But why do people feel they have to lie?

I don't get it.  Maybe I am too honest.  If my life experiences were not what they were I would say I was naive.

But, I just don't understand.  Why do people have to hide the truth.  Especially when it is so silly like the lie that was just told to me.

Don't feel bad. Venting is a lot better than bottling everything inside.

Maybe people lie because they're so concerned about what other people think of them. I don't know, but where I live it seems like everyone so worried about it that they lie a little (and in some cases, a lot...) to make themselves "look better". In my opinion, it makes the person look kind of shallow. It's like, if that person can't trust me enough to accept them the way they are, then how do I know that they're not lying about something else?

That's just my say on it *steps off soapbox*.

I also really appreciate the thoughts on the subject as well. Pretty great insight. Thank you so much! I have pretty much gotten over it, but I think I try to understand the things that cannot be understood.
