I am now torn between not wanting to see another story involving a strong female character being torn down for the sake of the typical male power fantasy and wanting to see dragon kitties eeeeee.
One thing that I thought would have really improved the movie and fit in fairly well would have been to give Astrid a backstory where her parents were killed by dragons. It would have given a lot of depth to her character, as well as explaining why she was so grim and determined to be a kickass dragon slayer in the beginning. And it would have given her a reason to hate dragons so much, and given poignancy to her relenting later on in the movie as she realizes that not all dragons are evil, and she doesn't have to devote her lives to hating and destroying them.
I'll say this up front: I LOVED Dragon. But one thing that bothered me was the fact that Hiccup and Astrid were just about the only skinny characters in the flick so they were obviously ~*meant to be*~. I think the twins have the honor of being the only other characters who were shaped the same way, and they were obviously there for the comic relief and thus negated as love interests.
I know a few years ago I wouldn't have even noticed, but I've become a lot more conscious of the media's portrayal of people who aren't skinny lately and it's starting to really bother me. (Now that I'm getting skinny. OH IRONY.)
