002. Christmas, Heechul/Ryeowook
Title: Underneath the Christmas Tree
Rating: G
It was a late night, his drama had taken longer to film due to some equipment failure and the fact that many of the scenes required to be filmed at night. Heechul was exhausted and hungry. But he promised to stop eating after six and it was definitely after six. Tiredly the male crawled into his bed wearing long pink pajama pants and a long sleeved shirt, it was just too cold to wear his traditional Tom & Jerry pajamas. Thankfully Heebum had already warmed up a spot for him so that he would have to spend a good ten minutes or so madly rubbing himself in an attempt to warm up faster.
He had just settled into slumber when his phone began to vibrate and Hongki’s voice rang throughout his room. Heebum hadn’t taken well to being suddenly woken up and had his claws sinking into Heechul’s arm. The male let out a yell before his cat released and scampered off, probably to go back to sleep. Damn cat. Heechul grabbed his phone, not even looking at who was calling before answering it angrily.
“Yah! What exactly do you think you’re doing calling so late?! Are you crazy? Aish! I’m bleeding now. Stupid Heebum. Why are you calling? It better be important! Aish…”
“Hyung…”
Kim Ryeowook. Heechul sighed into the phone. He hated feeling guilty for yelling and normally he wouldn’t, but when you yell at Kim Ryeowook…it was hard not to feel bad. But he was still annoyed. He sighed again, throwing his nice warm comforter off himself. He slid onto the floor, looking for his first aid kit. Having a cat made him get a lot of bandages. He pulled it out, taking out the things he needed while moving his phone onto his shoulder.
“What?”
“Are you really bleeding hyung? I’m sorry…”
The older member hissed into the phone as he wiped the little puncture wounds with an alcohol swab. He could hear some apprehension in their eternal magnae’s voice. At the very least something was up. Someone must have upset him dearly. He was going to have to kick someone’s ass when they got back.
“It’s alright. Why are you calling Wookie? Is Kyuhyun picking on you again? Are they not eating your food? …Did you just miss me?”
He could hear Ryeowook giggle on the other side of the line. Much better. He looked at the band-aids on his arm and silently thanked the cold season for long sleeves. He swore that if he had to explain that ‘no he wasn’t hurting himself, he just owned a cat’ to Soojin again, he’d purposely spill something on her…on accident.
“No they’re being good. It’s just…ah!…just the wind. It’s really loud. And scary. All the windows are rattling. Oh! And there’s one loose somewhere because the wind is literally howling in the room hyung! I can’t sleep…”
If Ryeowook was calling him it must mean that the others weren’t picking up their phone and the SJ-M members were already asleep or something. Ryeowook wasn’t the type who would disturb someone else if he could help it. Ah but what to do? Heechul wasn’t very good at comforting people. Especially over the phone. Suddenly he heard the sound of one of the ornaments on their Christmas tree drop. It was a good thing they switched to plastic ones, Heebum took a liking to playing with the bulbs. Ah, that made a good idea.
“Ryeowookie~ Our precious Ryeowookie~ Did you set up your Christmas tree?”
“Uh…yeah… We finished it earlier today. Why?”
Heechul hoisted himself onto his feet, pulling his comforter and pillow off the bed.
“Hyung?”
“Get your beddings Wookie. And your pillow. And your dolls. And probably more blankets.”
“…Hyung?”
“Do it Wookie!”
He chuckled as the other squeaked over the line, smirking to himself as the sounds of the rustling cloth came from the phone. Heechul pulled more blankets from the closet before going outside and dumping them onto the floor in front of the tree. He spread a few layers of blankets on the floor before setting his pillow beneath the tree.
“Hyung, what do you want me to do with this?”
Heechul immediately switched the call to a video call and held his phone away from him as he waited for Ryeowook to accept. Without a command the other did and Heechul do see the confusion on the other’s face. Heechul gasped.
“Did you not remove your make-up Kim Ryeowook?”
Ryeowook looked away from the phone and started doing that thing he did with his lips whenever he knew he was caught.
“Yah! Kim Ryeowook! Did I or did I not tell you that if you didn’t remove your make-up when you get home you’re skin will become worse? You always put on too much make-up. And then you don’t even take it off. How’re you going to get nice pretty skin if you keep this bad habit up, huh? Where’s Hangeng? What’s Hangeng doing? He’s not asleep is he? It doesn’t matter, even if he is, wake him up.”
Ryeowook’s eyes widened, looking at the camera before looking away again.
“He’s….he’s busy…”
The younger gulped. Even in the dark he could see Heechul’s eyes narrowing. Nothing got past Kim Heechul. Nothing.
“Go to his room.”
“But hyung!”
“Go!”
Ryeowook groaned, marching over to the door. He put his ear to the door, trying to listen as to what was going on behind it but at the same time try to not hear.
“Hyung~! They’re busy~!”
He tried his best to do his puppy face over the phone. Any of his cute expressions that would distract Heechul from telling him to do something he really didn’t want to do. He really didn’t want to witness what was going on. He already knew but he didn’t want to actually see!
“Just open the door and stick the phone inside.”
“But-“
“Do it!”
Ryeowook ‘eep’ed once more, cracking the door open enough so that he could fit his hand in. He closed his eyes and covered one ear, grimacing as the hot pants drafted out of the crack.
“Yah! Ryeowook. They’re not doing it yet. It’s still safe.”
The sounds suddenly stopped and a forced squeak was heard.
“Did you hear Heechul-hyung’s voice?”
There was a scramble going inside the room as he could hear Heechul begin to squawk orders over the phone. He opened the door more, a look of complete embarrassment and sorry on his face.
“Give the phone to Kyungie! Give the phone to Kyungie!”
Hankyung walked over to Ryeowook, trying to not shoot death glares at the smaller boy, and took the phone out of his hand and faced the camera towards him.
“What do you want Chul-ah?”
Heechul cackled for a second.
“That’s not your shirt Hannie~”
“What. Do. You want?”
“Hey Siwon stop trying to hide it we already know what’s there! Oh yeah, Kyungie, you know that bag of stuff I snuck into your suitcase? Give it to Wookie. I need to scold him. Siwon stop trying to look for your pants, I know you two are just going to go back to making more little Henry’s and Zhoumi’s once Ryeowook leaves.”
Both Siwon and Ryeowook yelled hyung at the phone as Hankyung rolled his eyes. Heechul knew him too well. He went over to his suitcase and pulled out the pink bag. He didn’t know what was inside it but whatever it was it had to do with Ryeowook. He handed the bag and the phone over to their eternal magnae and with a smile telling him to not disturb them again that night or else.
Ryeowook nodded and went to the bathroom to inspect what was in the bag.
“Put the phone someplace where I can see your face. I need to make sure you do it right.”
He looked around the bathroom for a bit before setting the phone on the toothbrush holder mounted on the wall before pulling out the items in the bag.
“Hyung…these look like Zhoumi’s.”
“Of course they do. I’m the one who recommended those to him. It’s a good thing I got good habits into that boy or else he’d be as bad as you.”
Then they must be good. Zhoumi had expensive taste, no doubt he had inherited that from their resident princess. But he couldn’t argue, Heechul did have really good skin. It was best to listen. It wasn’t like Heechul was the only one who told him he had bad make-up habits.
“Wash your face first. With warm water. No soap.” Ryeowook did as he was told.
“Yah! Don’t scrub. Just splash it on and rub it away gently. Gently!” The younger looked up at his phone. The look Heechul was giving him couldn’t be called motherly, that was Eeteuk’s job. He couldn’t really describe it, well he couldn’t describe any of the expressions Heechul made. Someone else usually named them and he just jumped on board.
“The silver package. That’s eye make-up remover. Get rid of all that eyeliner and mascara. Why’d they use mascara on you? You don’t even need it. You have nice eyelashes. Unlike Game-Kyu. Game-Kyu needs mascara.”
He stopped listening for a bit, knowing that Heechul was likely going on a rant about Kyuhyun’s eyelashes which potentially could turn into a rant about Starcraft. He still didn’t really understand what was so addictive about that game, no matter how many times Kyuhyun got him to play. He found the wipes and opened it with some difficulty. Well that was strange. Ryeowook looked at the other things, noticing that some of them still had that plastic covering over the tops.
“Hyung…are these new?”
“…and really he plays too long into the night. Orcs aren’t even that good. What? Oh yeah. Some of them. I switched onto some new products that Soojin recommended to me. So those are yours now.”
“Wait wait. All of these are mine?”
“Of course. I wouldn’t give our precious Wookie anything less than the best. Consider it an early portion of your Christmas gift. Besides you need it. Ah it’s going to take awhile to get your skin into the shape it needs to be. Hurry up and get off all that eyeliner. You look like a panda. When you finish use the cleanser. I shouldn’t have to explain that to you, you’ve probably seen Zhoumi use it already.”
Ryeowook could only blink at the phone. Ah…Heechul was being suspiciously nice early on this season. It was weird. He smiled though, at the very least it was proof that Heechul really did care of him. He glanced at the mirror making a face at himself, he really did look like a panda. He started to listen to Heechul’s orders. Gently using the cleanser and washing it off with warm water, Heechul emphasized the warm, he didn’t even know if it made a difference or not.
In a few minutes he was done and packing up his things. It was strangely well prepared, as if Heechul was planning on this all alone. But wouldn’t be that much of a surprise, Heechul was sneaky in his acts of kindness. And if it wasn’t Heechul who prompted this than it would probably be Zhoumi…on orders of Heechul. He left the bathroom and returned to his pile of things in front of the tree.
“So what was I supposed to do with all of this hyung?”
Heechul looked sleepy on the camera. He looked really thin too. But he wasn’t quite sure whether it was the lighting or not. The Heechul on the screen moved a bit before he assumed Heechul turned the phone around and he could see in the glow of the Christmas tree Heechul’s little bed. Or nest, it looked like something Heebum would do.
“Hurry up Wookie. And remember to put your pillow under the tree. And turn the lights on.”
Ryeowook blinked, wondering what exactly Heechul was thinking. A rather rough wind scratched across the glass and a loud howling echoed throughout the room. He didn’t question any more, setting his phone on the ground and did as he was told.
“Hurry! Hurry! Hurry!”
He scrambled to find the switch that turned on the lights before climbing into his little bed. He moved the phone and saw that Heechul too had settled into his bed. His hyung was certainly the looker. Heebum had joined Heechul under the tree and was snoozing as Heechul scratched his head. It was actually really pretty. His hyung aglow with the different color lights and reflections of the bulb, the wooden floor of their dorm was dotted with blues, greens, and reds (though he swore some of them were actually pink, did Sungmin hyung do the decorating?). He smiled and continued to watch Heechul a bit longer before pondering, he could see both of Heechul’s hands. Where did he put the phone?
“Hyung…where’s your phone?”
Heechul looked glanced at the camera, still cooing over his ‘precious baby Heebummie’. He smiles and the camera is unfocused for a second as he turns it around and suddenly Ryeowook is looking up the tree at home. And he thought the reflection was pretty.
“Isn’t it pretty Wookie? I stole Sungminnie’s pink lights. But I’m sure he won’t mind. The normal colors were too boring, we do those every year. The new plastic bulbs are working great. Heebummie doesn’t break them. It’s so pretty isn’t Wookie? Warm too.”
Ryeowook had to admit that it was really warm under the tree. Maybe it was because of all the lights. He giggled, moved his phone so that Heechul could look into the tree in their current apartment.
“We only have plan lights hyung. But Henry’s parents sent him a bunch of really fun ornaments. Most of them are really glittery instruments but some of them actually work. It was so nice of them. I wish we could visit them some time.”
“No color lights? Aish, that’s crazy. Absolutely crazy. When you come home we’ll give you the ones that we aren’t using. Crazy.”
Ryeowook laughed again and noticed that Heechul had started to talk with his hands. Ah, he must of put his phone on the branches. He followed Heechul’s example and the two began to talk throughout the night and Ryeowook couldn’t even hear the wind.
Heechul woke up to someone kicking his leg. “Yah. Kim Heechul. What are you doing here? It’s almost eight. When does your schedule start?” Heechul groaned, crawling out from under the tree, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. He yawned, stretching very catlike before peering up at their leader, still dressed in his pajamas. He blinked, trying to gain his senses back before remembering something. He reached underneath the tree, pulling out his phone.
“Wookie~”
Ryeowook was a light sleeper and had woken up hearing Eeteuk’s voice over the line. “Hyung~?”
“Ryeowook. You were talking to Ryeowook? Were you two on all night?”
Heechul just stood up and slipped his arm around Eeteuk’s waist, holding the phone out. A smile on his face
“Morning Wookie~”
Ryeowook smiled back, waving at Eeteuk. “Morning Teukkie-hyung, Chullie-hyung.”
Eeteuk turned towards Heechul, glaring at him. “You did stay up talking to him. And video conversation? The management won’t like that Heechul.”
Ryeowook giggled as Heechul turned back to Eeteuk swatting at the other’s face to get him to shut up.
“Hyung. I have to go. It’s almost time for the others to get up and I need to cook breakfast.”
“I’ll deal with management Gaeteuk. Go wake up the others. Oh? Okay Wookie. Bye. Love you.”
“I love you too hyung. Thanks.”
Heechul only beamed into the camera and Ryeowook beamed back. This was their love.
