Drabble set post 4.1. Written at 2am and edited by my lovely LB.
He pauses, finger hovering over the enter button. It's taken him eight minutes just to figure out what sounded all right to send, but now that it's blinking back at him from the screen of his cell it seems all wrong again. He knows there's nothing bad about it - not really - and they agreed they'd still be friends. Friends worry about each other right? But there's the knot in his stomach that reminds him they're not friends - not like he is with Sam or she is with Santana. He hadn’t spent hours with Sam or Santana mapping one another’s bodies, or danced together at prom. He hadn’t faced his fears to sing a duet with either of them; he had never planned their future together.
He was going to spend the rest of his life with Tina, and a stupid text with censored words doesn't feel right. It isn’t right. Sam had told him about the whole competition for lead of New Directions, and he hasn’t been able to concentrate on anything for days since. Not because Blaine isn’t good- Blaine’s great, although Mike feels a bit bad for Sam even if he kept saying he didn’t mind- but Tina. Tina who Mike knows wanted the chance to shine so badly, and has been so patient, and so understanding, and has such fragile self-esteem. He doesn't think she’s fragile, just that she takes rejection so hard. She’s waited three years and should be the female lead but suddenly some new girl waltzes in and takes it all? Becomes Schue’s new favourite and Tina gets pushed to the side again? It’s bullshit.
He just wants to say fuck it to his classes and drive straight to her house and hold her face in his hands and tell her she's amazing over and over until she believes it. He wants to remind her that she's so much more than singing and popularity contests. Mostly he just wants to see her again - touch her and hold her and tell her how stupid this was and how he knows it's scary being so far apart but he's fucking head over heels stupid crazy in love with her and that's never going to change.
That's all Mike's wanted for two days now, but instead he's trying to text her something reassuring; friendly, and kind, but not too pushy. Definitely nothing that could be interpreted as coming from a partner instead of just a friend. Just a friend. They're just friends. Fuck.
His finger jabs the delete button until the screen is empty. There's a split second where he acknowledges that this is so stupid, but he planned a life with her. He might have been okay at one time with just being friends, but he hasn't been friends with her since sometime between Sectionals and Asian Camp after sophomore year and fuck that. Two people with their chemistry aren't supposed to just be friends. He jabs the speed dial before he can second guess himself, and when he hears the click and her voice - quiet and unsure and just Tina- he takes a breath. "Hey…"
