Interesting. I hope he revised his opinions in time, and rose above his predjudices. Some do so admirably. Others don't. It's always a good idea to avoid deifying people, in part, because of this very issue.

I am curious. Does "unclean"="outcast"?

To the best of my knowledge, Gandhi never revised his opinion about blacks, he merely took his struggle to India.

I would say that "unclean" is worse than "outcast". The "untouchables" are named as such *because* they are too unclean to touch. Unclean people aren't worthy of anything more than being an outcast. Even the term "kaffir" derived from the black Africans that were in Arab slave trade and were too animalistic to be freed.
