Mike Newton could not understand why Bella Swan loved Edward Cullen.

Cullen was cold, hard, indifferent, and lifeless. Mike was friendly, fun, funny, and he liked zombie movies. Why then did Bella choose Edward over him? Mike just couldn’t figure it out.

He watched Cullen in the cafeteria one day. Cullen cracked a small smile at something Bella had said. Mike watched that smile until it disappeared. Okay, maybe that was the reason. That smile was heartbreaking.

Mike started watching them everyday out of the corner of his eye. Every now and then that smile would reemerge.

If there was one thing he could find that was likable about Edward Cullen, it was definitely that smile.
