meta: how fandom has changed your moral/political views

Jul 17, 2008 15:26

A quick note before we begin: All experiences discussed henceforth are mine, and aren't intended to be a generalization. You don't have to agree with me. Actually, I prefer it if you don't: there's better discussion to be had that way. Also, I don't mean to be offensive in the least, to anyone. Honestly. These are just thoughts, and this is ( Read more... )

I don't think fandom has changed my views of the world, but my views on certain things have changed since I got started in fandom. Kind of like correlation vs. causation. Like, when I was in HS and just got started in fandom, slash freaked me out because, like you, I wasn't okay with homosexuality in general. As my world-view changed, so did my opinion on slashfic ( ... )

Ahahaha, hi, new friend. I was confused for a second there.

I love the Susan/Peter ship, by the way -- for all the reasons you stated. Although I don't understand your incest opinions, haha. They seem a little bit random to me. But that's not a bad thing! :)

Oh well, to each their own. Meanwhile, I need to get started on a Peter/Susan fic.

Meta is fun, I like it. I think I've found a new obsession.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I think it's more like a suggestion -- something a little more subtle than just saying "Reading slash will make you gay!!!!!" I guess it's just the fact that it's out there in the "mainstream", instead of being hidden. I mean, just being exposed to it can change people's opinions.

There definitely has to be a line between fiction and real life, I agree. Although you might find it cool to try some new sex position you read about in a fic :D

That makes sense. A lot of slash ships that I love don't really have to do with their sexuality -- I don't get hung up on their Kinsey scale number, for example, when I'm writing a fic. They just seem to go together.

I understand about the rape thing. Non-con in fic isn't something I actively seek out, or even read.

Thanks! I love this sort of thing. Meta is now my new favorite activity. :D

Hehe, don't worry. I think your opinion is really interesting. It makes sense, though. I get how slashing random minor characters who don't have an interaction isn't as crazy as slashing two best friends.

Thanks for commenting -- I love the input.

Hahah I feel sorry for your future boyfriend. Fandom does tend to do things like that :D

Me too! I feel like I can connect to people better now, also.
