Coos and gleeful gurgles waft up the white stairs, drifting in and out of empty rooms. Rosalie’s laugh plays softly through the baby’s sighs.
Book lined walls close in on him, her fingers dig in to his neck. He wrenches forward and her head meets red leather volumes in a ringing thud.
His eyes close and all else ceases to exist in brief moments of relief. “Rosalie.” He whispers, pulling his fingers across the curve of her back. Time stops, Tanya freezes, her body bound tense in his arms. With slow, desperate breaths she lets herself fall back into his embrace, her lips tilting up into a small, sad smile.
She’ll lie to herself later, tell herself it doesn’t hurt (it always does)
