Hunxue Kids

We had a great time at Rich and Cherry's place this afternoon, even if I lost two croquet games. Big turnout of couples with their babies and toddlers -- something like 15 all below the age of three. Unbelievably, Guenevere was the only "pure Chinese" baby (though of course her father is an American citizen). There were two belonging to Wang Xin ( Read more... )

I remember a few years ago was the first time I heard the word 'blasian' - a half-black, half-Asian person. I look forward to the day when inventing clever portmanteaus ceases to be necessary. Miscegenation is a beautiful word.

My wife and I were at Declan's "month day" party, too. She's Chinese (ethnic Mongolian, actually) and I'm a white American. We have a 2-1/2 year old boy ( ... )

Glad to hear that your experiences got better once the baby came along. I expect we'll see one another at another baby gathering soon: lots more to come in this Year of the Monkey.

My sense is that Beijingers seem, on the whole, to have gotten over whatever hangups they once had about cross-cultural relationships. Nowadays, instead of hearing all the time about how such relatinships are doomed to failure you hear instead how hunxue kids are smarter and healthier. The word they use now, half-jokingly, is gailiang -- "improved" species.

Hey, thanks! That's very kind of you. Let me know if there's anything you think needs satirizing in this fine city of ours and I'll have a go at it.

Hey thanks Lucy! Good to hear from you. I've been pretty busy setting up a new business (Mauro's involved in it too) and of course with fatherhood, but when you get a chance, tell me what you've been up to and what you've been doing in Xiamen!

Kaiser,

Congratulations to you two, and now three! I certainly hope to see the little Joan Jett soon. All is well in Ohio, The Heart of it All.

Please pass along my best to all those with the great fortune to have crossed my path a few years ago. Again, congrats!
