Chapter 1

Sho stood in a queue in front of the counter, slightly annoyed.

There were more than ten people before him, however this was the only one open, and yet the woman in charge continued to talk happily with her colleague. He would be late for his appointment with Yamaguchi- san and that would definitely lead to trouble with his boss. Once again he checked his watch as a young man in a long black coat, who carried a black bag, hurried to the head of the queue causing the other customers to mumble and curse.

“Excuse me, could you help me out please?” he smiled at the lady at the counter. “I would love to have all the money you store here.”

He pulled out a gun, pointing it at her forehead while simultaneously dropping the black bag in front of her. The lady raised her hands reflexively, just like all the other people had.

Sho gasped in shock and accidentally dropped his own bag; the sound of the leather hitting the floor broke the silence that had developed around them.

“The money is in the safe,” she said fearfully and pointed to another room.

“Then get your colleague to do it,” he nodded in the direction of the man standing next to her who hurried away after grabbing the black bag he had dropped. “And don't even try to push the emergency button or I'll kill all of you.”

He looked at his hostages, wondering why on earth the bank needed to be that full.

“The same applies to all of you. If anyone tries to run away or do something stupid I’ll shoot you, got that?”

The customers nodded, hands raised.

A few moments later the man returned, bag full, and handed it to the gun-carrying man with shaking hands.

“Thank you very much,” he smiled brightly and hurried towards the door, stopping a few steps before it and looked at Sho.

“You'll be coming with me,” he said, smiling, and grabbed his arm, pulling him along.

“What?” Sho said shocked as he tried to free himself from the grip. “Please... don't...”

“Shut up and walk!” the thief turned hostage taker said, pushing him forward out of the bank and to his black van that he had parked in an alley beforehand.

He shoved him inside and followed, taking a rope that was lying on the floor. He grabbed Sho's hands, forcing them behind his back and tied them firmly.

“Please... let me go,” Sho begged, thrashing against his restraints unsuccessfully as the rope cut into his delicate skin, causing him to gasp in pain.

“Shut up, will you?” the other one said and grabbed the bandana he was wearing around his neck. He shoved it into the hostage's mouth and tied it behind his head.

Sho’s eyes widened in shock as he shook his head desperately, trying to get rid of the fabric.

“How cute,” said the kidnapper, amused, as he patted his head. “See you later then...”

He got up and left the van, slamming the door shut. It left Sho in total darkness, the fast beating of his heart and the rush of blood through his head the only thing he could hear until the engine started and he felt the van move.

~+~

Sho couldn't really tell how much time had passed until the car finally stopped for good, but it had been an awfully long trip during which he had been thrown against the walls of the van more than once.

He tried to free himself again but the bonds didn't give in. He sat up, panting hard, as the gag forced him to breathe through only his nose. The kidnapper peeked in, before he crawled into the van and grabbed him by the arm.

“Come on,” he said and forced him up, guiding him out of the van and towards a little house.

Sho looked around confused, but couldn't see anything in the darkness that was surrounding both of them, only making out that there was snow everywhere. He looked at the abductor and tried to speak, but only muffled sounds made its way through the gag.

The kidnapper couldn't help but laugh at his unsuccessful attempts as he pushed him into the house and a small room.

He landed on the floor, unable to keep his balance with his tied hands, and gasped in pain as his knees hit the hard wood underneath him. His captor knelt down next to him and untied his hands, only to tie them again immediately, however this time in front of Sho's body.

He tried to get rid of the rope that was tied firmly around his wrists and looked at his kidnapper in pure horror, as said captor pulled out another rope and attached his wrists to a metallic grid right next to Sho.

He pulled at his restraints, trying to see if he had a chance to get away but of course they didn't give in.

“Stop fighting,” the abductor said quietly. “You won't be able to free yourself. Rather, you’ll hurt yourself.”

Once again he patted Sho's head and smiled before he got up.

“This is where you'll be staying for the next few days. Enjoy yourself.”

He walked out of the room, leaving a desperate Sho behind. His heart was still beating incredibly fast and no matter how hard he tried to calm down, he didn't succeed.

Just what was the kidnapper planning to do with him?

He was probably trying to get money from him and his chances were actually pretty good. His father worked in politics, his mother as a professor for a well-known university. It wasn't that they were the richest people in Japan, but they definitely had some money. However, this guy couldn't know about that, right? Maybe if he told him that he didn't have money at all?

That probably wasn’t the best idea. Sho was scared to death that his captor would think of him as useless and kill him right away; burying his corpse wherever they were at the moment and his parents would never find him.

Just the thought of it made his eyes fill up with tears. He blinked them away hastily.

After a few moments, he had calmed down a bit and he was able to look around to inspect the room he would be staying in for the next few days. There was a couch on the opposite wall and a TV set on a little cupboard, a small table standing in the middle and a little oven in the corner next to the door. The interior looked clean but old, several years old already, Sho figured. He turned around and looked up to the small window, noticing that it had started to snow, big flakes falling at an amazing speed.

He could hear his abductor running around in the other rooms of the house and that alone started anew his frantic pulse.

How long would he keep him here? He had said ‘the next few days’, but how many days had he planned?

He pulled at the rope slightly, sighing in frustration.

His wrists hurt, cut by the tough knots that chafed his skin. He could feel a cramp developing from the awkward position in which his hands were attached through the grid. He shifted several times but it remained uncomfortable for him. On top of it, he was starting to freeze.

The room was cold, probably only a few degrees warmer then outside, so sitting on the floor didn't help much.

Just as he thought about that the door opened and his kidnapper stepped in, carrying a basket full of wood.

“I'm sorry that it's so cold. I'll make a fire now,” he said and hurried towards the oven where he lit the fire within a few minutes.

“It'll get warmer soon,” he said and looked at Sho, noticing that he was shivering slightly.

He frowned and left the room, only to return with a blanket a few moments later. He unfolded it and wrapped it around Sho's shoulders.

The shivering man looked at him, surprised, not expecting such a gentle act.

“Could you please stop looking at me like that?” he asked unpleasantly and untied the bandana, throwing it to the floor carelessly.

Sho sighed in relief and tried to catch his breath while continuing to stare at him.

“What... what do you want from me?” he asked fearful and gazed at his tied hands.

“I want some money,” he smiled. “You look wealthy, am I right?”

Sho shook his head.

“You're wrong. I... I don't have any money.”

“So?” he looked at him surprised. “Then maybe your parents? Or maybe your wife?”

He didn't know how to answer. He didn’t particularly want to tell the truth, but he didn’t want to lie either.

“Please,” he begged quietly. “Let me go.”

The abductor shook his head.

“I'm sorry, I can't.”

Sho looked up at him in, his eyes filled with a mixture between sadness and fear.

“Please... I promise I won't go to the police, I swear.”

He laughed quietly.

“Ah, you’re so cute,” he caressed his cheek and Sho tried to flinch away, not wanting to be touched. “I won't let you go until I get my money. But there is no need to worry. I'm not planning to harm or kill you.”

The prisoner looked away.

“I know you'll kill me once you got what you want,” he whispered.

“Huh?” the other man asked, confused. “I'm really not going to kill you. I may be a bank robber, and a kidnapper for that matter, but I'm not a murderer.”

Sho didn't respond to that.

“So, do you want to eat something?”

“No,” the bound man answered.

“Are you sure? We had to drive around for a few hours to get here.”

“Where are we?” he looked around.

“Far up in the mountains. It's snowing outside like crazy, so it’ll take days until they'll find us, if they even make the effort.”

Sho looked down and bit his lip.

“Look,” he grabbed the other one's chin and made Sho look at him. “I'm sorry that I brought you here, but I can't change the fact that I did what I did. Once I have what I want you'll be a free man again but until then... just live with it, okay?” He got up. “I'll get you something to eat.”

He walked out of the room and returned a moment later with some melon bread.

“Here,” he smiled and knelt down next to him, placing it in his tied hands.

“I'm not hungry,” Sho whispered, not even looking at the bread.

The kidnapper looked at him, confused.

“Okay then. Let’s watch some telly. Maybe they're already reporting about us.”

He got up and sat down on the couch, turning on the television.

Sho switched his position so that he could see the TV as well, surprised to see that they really were reporting about it on the news. They even showed the tape of the surveillance camera. It hurt inside to see how he was grabbed and dragged along.

“The hostage is 27 year old Sakurai Sho, son of the politician Sakurai Shuuji. The police have already started to investigate the whereabouts of Mr. Sakurai,” said the newscaster.

Sho's eyes widened in shock and he looked at his kidnapper in fear.

“You lied, huh?” he looked back at him. “That wasn't a very good decision. I'm sorry for you.”

“Just because my father is a politician doesn't mean that we have money,” he tried uncertainly.

“Are you kidding me, Sakurai Sho? Every politician is wealthy. I'm sure you have tons of money and some of it will soon belong to me,” he got up and walked towards Sho.

“This is for lying,” he punched him hard, causing the slight man to gasp in pain and drop his bread.

The hostage looked down and bit his lip, his cheek prickling and stinging.

“I hate liars,” the abductor said and was somehow shocked to see how scared Sho was. He caressed the cheek he had just hit gently. “I'm sorry that I hit you, okay?”

Sho nodded slowly, still looking on the floor.

“Are you really that afraid of me?” he asked after a little while.

“Of course I am,” was the quiet reply.

“Well, how come? I told you that I won't harm you.”

Sho just looked at him insecurely.

“You... just hit me, right?”

His captor felt guilty and smiled embarrassedly.

“I did... but I told you that I'm sorry.”

Sho looked down again, a single tear rolling down his cheek. He felt ashamed for crying in front of his kidnapper and closed his eyes to stop more tears from falling.

The other man noticed and leaned in to rub the tear away with his thumb.

“Can I do something to make you feel better?” he asked calmly.

Sho remained silent and a few seconds later he felt strong arms wrapping around him from behind, holding him tight. He held his breath for a moment, unsure of what to think about the sudden development, but he had to admit it did feel good and calming.

“You're thinking of me as a bad guy, right?” he mumbled quietly into Sho's neck.

“What else should I be thinking?” Sho finally spoke again. “You abducted me, tied me up and brought me here.”

“Yeah,” he laughed nervously. “I didn't really make a good first impression, right? And I'm sorry that you have to go through this. However, I have a good reason for it.”

“I know... you want money.”

The kidnapper loosened the hug and grabbed the bread Sho had dropped, pulling out a little piece of it.

“That's right, but I have a reason for it,” he placed the piece of bread on Sho's full lips. “Now eat.”

Sho looked at him.

“I told you I'm n...” he never finished the sentence since the abductor had already shoved the bread gently into his mouth.

Sho chewed and looked at him, pouting. He felt slightly humiliated at having to be hand fed.

“You look cute when you're pouting,” the kidnapper smiled and continued feeding Sho, who seemed to have given up on denying food.

“I do not...” He mumbled and tilted his head after half of the bread, indicating that he didn't want to eat anymore.

“You do,” he smiled. “Are you full?”

The hostage nodded and looked at him.

“Can I ask you something?” he asked.

“Sure.”

“What is your reason? It's only fair if you tell me, right?”

He kept quiet, obviously thinking if it was okay to tell him or not.

“That's not important. It's better if you do not know why.”

“But... I would like to know.”

He got up and sighed.

“That's really none of your business. I'll be going to bed now.”

Sho looked at him, confused, as he watched him turn off the television.

“You should try to sleep as well. See you tomorrow.”

“But...” Sho started quietly, but the kidnapper had already left, turning off the light behind him.

‘Try to sleep as well’? How was he supposed to sleep in such a position? And why had the he left all of a sudden?

It was only fair to know the reason. After all, he had been kidnapped by him because of it. He deserved to know why. Yet, something had changed around him after he had asked, so it must have been something very personal.

He curled up and rested his head on the grid, a position that hurt the least and thought about everything that happened until he finally fell asleep from pure exhaustion.
