I quit investing any emotion in software publishers. It's for the best in the end.

For example, my favorite big graphic editing package, Canvas X, was once published by Deneba. They sold it all to ACD. In the end, ACD did pump cash and resources into the software, but failed to promote the application in the right circles, aiming for technical micro marketing in the oil, cartography and geography markets.

The software still exisits and may be updated with better features, but I'm happy with what I have on my hard drive today.

As for Maya, one can only hope that the prices will drop like a rock. I can't understand why a full version of Maya Unlimited 7 Nodelock for OS X should cost $7000. For that kind of cash, they should ship it on a dual 2.7GHz G5 with a pair of 30" screens.

My problem is with Autodesks policy against developing 3D programs for the Macintosh platform. The only reason they released Combustion for the Macintosh platform was to compete with Final Cut Pro, Avid and Adobe. They don't see the Macintosh as a platform that can run 3D applications. They've ignored requests several times by Macintosh users to develop a Mac version of 3DS Max. Maya for Mac OS X came to light only 4 years ago and it has sky rocketed as the 3D development software of choice on the Mac platform.

I'm afraid that Maya 7 will be the last OS X release of Maya.

I don't have the link to the article I read on this subject this morning, but the gist of the story was that if Apple feels that 3D rendering is a mission critical application, they'll buy a third party developer and application (Poser anyone?) and build it into a must have application, a la Final Cut Pro.

And it is a longshot, but this could mean that Autodickheads have got the clue and really want to play in the growing OS X market at last. The tipping point for moving to Apple's OS has happened. Professionals are buying G5 towers for video editing based on Final Cut and the related pro apps that Apple has built. With the switch to Intel next summer, even more hardware will move into the video community. There's plenty of money in that industry to make an OS X version profitable.

Or Autodimwits could just Windowfy the software and ignore us some more. The good news is that other developers will see this as a challenge and create better software at some point.
