Summary: Sally comes to a realization.
“Why didn't he wear a mask?”
Sally lifted her head from her coffee, looking over at Anderson in the break-room. “What?”
“You know, Sherlock, with the kids. I mean, it's an obvious thing to do, conceal your identity from the victims. Any idiot knows that. I would have worn a mask.”
Sally blinked, this information, this question, startling her. It is an obvious thing to do, wearing a mask. As stupid as the Freak can be about people, he knows that people will recognize a face they've seen before. He walked into the room to see the children as if he couldn't imagine being recognized. So he didn't wear a mask. And the girl recognized him, and screamed. Could he really have been so foolish? It boggles the mind.
Wait.
A mask.
Wearing a mask.
She choked on her coffee, burning her lip and staining her blouse. “Oh, my God. Oh, my God! Tricked! We were tricked! It was a frame-up!”
“Er, yes? We know, Sally, you were the one that spotted it. Are you all right?”
“No! I'm not! I was wrong! The real kidnappers must have...oh, my God! Sherlock didn't do it! Where's Lestrade?” She bolted up out of her chair, ready to charge into Lestrade's office, when an announcement came unto the break-room television.
“We are interrupting this broadcast for a special report. Sherlock Holmes has committed suicide by jumping from the roof of St. Bartholomew's Hospital. Reports have just come back confirming him dead. Sherlock Holmes...”
The coffee cup Sally still had in her hand fell from her fingers. When it crashed to the ground, miraculously not shattering, it stained her sock.
“Oh. My God.”
