Self-publishing has changed a lot over the years. Had you been thinking about this even five or six years ago, I'd be worried about what would happen to your book. But these days, a lot of writers go that route, and if you're careful you should be OK.
Recording is a great idea. I love to listen to books on CD and on my iPod. Given the choice, I'd probably take the recording.
Like I said, I'm doing my homework. In fact, The Fine Print of Self-Publishing is excellent for this. It lays out the actual math of self-publishing, and how to tell if the publishing company is ripping you off. He, going by things like fair pricing and customer service, also rates self publishing companies. The ratings are Outstanding, Pretty Good, Just Okay, To Avoid, and Worst of the Worst.
Worst of the Worst has one entry, and, curious, I skipped ahead to read it. The company is WinePress, and good lord, are they horrible. They really rip off their customers, and they are lying liars who lie. The worst part? They are a religious book publisher.
I enjoy reading things aloud, too. I'm glad you like the idea!
