Once Upon A Time: A Kakashi X Sakura Fairy Tale Fanfiction Challenge
Tell me a story…
The girl pouted at the older man. She wrinkled her nose in disgust as she squirmed in place on the park bench. “Eeeww! That’s a boy story! I want to hear a girl story!”
“Eh, Tomoko? A … girl … story?” The confused shinobi scratched his head, confounded once again by one of his “niece’s” requests. “How troublesome,” he muttered not quite under his breath.
“Uncle!” she cried with more exasperation than a six-year-old should be able to express as she exaggerated her pout even further.
Whoops, he knew that tone. If she’d been standing she’d have stamped her little foot with her hands on her hips - just like his former teammate and her mother. He held his hands up in a placating manner. “Okay, okay. Geeze.” He sighed and resigned himself to what was sure to be a frustrating afternoon babysitting. Little boys were far easier to cope with in his opinion. “What’s in a girl’s story then?”
Suspicious at her uncle’s uncharacteristically quick capitulation, she narrowed her eyes to study him for a moment. Once satisfied he was indeed taking her request seriously, she smiled coyly and said, “Um, well … a girl story has, has … um, princes! And, uh, princesses! Um, and magic and dragons and, and, rescues and….” She paused, unsure what else she was forgetting something. “Oh! And happy endings! The prince always gets the girl!”
The shinobi groaned quietly; the prince getting the girl didn’t always mean a happy ending in his experience. He should never have agreed to watch Ino’s daughter while she was off at the beauty salon. Who knew that such a simple thing as getting a haircut could take several hours? He eyed the eager little girl and sighed again, unable to shatter her illusions. “Princes and princesses, eh?”
“Yeah, princes and princesses - beautiful people.” Her eyes suddenly widened in surprised pleasure and, pointing enthusiastically, she bounced up and down on the bench next to him. “Like, like them!”
Dreading what he was about to see, he turned to follow her slightly pudgy finger and bit off a curse. Tomoko had spotted the two least likely characters in the village to populate her story - though, he had to admit they were dressed appropriately enough for it.
“This is all your fault, you know!” Sakura cried angrily as she fought with the multitude of petticoats required to fill out her skirt, stiletto heels needed to prevent the beautiful garment from dragging on the ground and miles of synthetic pink hair draped around her shoulders several times before trailing to the ground -several feet of which was tangled around a decorative wrought-iron park fence. Unable to actually bend to untangle the skirts herself ( a corset may give her an exaggerated hourglass figure accentuating her less than ample curves and do some very interesting things to her bust but as far as movement was concerned, it was useless) she’d been reduced to trying ineffectually to tug it free.
Doing his best not to laugh, Kakashi watched her losing battle out of the corner of his eye - more than well aware that their current situation was indeed his fault. “Oh? And why is that?” he asked innocently.
She stopped and stared at him, flabbergasted that he should even think to ask such a thing. Because he couldn’t keep his hands to himself, they’d been unforgivably late to the last jonin meeting - earning them a D-rank mission acting as window dressing at a theme party in the park. He’d gotten off easy with a prince’s costume that wasn’t too uncomfortable: a loose ruffled top with gathered sleeves, a pair of fitted pants, a matching jacket and an eye patch. Granted, it was fairly silly, but at least it was reasonably comfortable.
Now she, on the other hand … she’d gotten saddled with one of the most ridiculously impractical garments she had ever seen and a wig that was just plain absurd. That’s not to say that the dress wasn’t stunning - from the outside. She’d felt like a princess when she’d first looked in the mirror. At least, she had until she’d tried to do just about anything other than stand around looking pretty. The novelty had worn off fairly quickly once she realized that it hadn’t been made for her to do … well, anything. As for the wig? The less said of the impossibly long, shockingly pink locks the better.
Realizing that Sakura was not going to move until he responded, he turned to see her glaring at him, her hands tightly clenched into fists that shook with suppressed anger and embarrassment. He hastily backtracked, having not realized just how upset she really was over the humiliating experience, and joined her at the ornamental fence.
Slipping into character, he smiled as charmingly as his ever present mask allowed. “Aw… I have told you that you look absolutely beautiful in that dress, right?”
In spite of herself, Sakura felt her cheeks tint. He’d certainly said no such thing; he almost never commented on her appearance.
While she was distracted, he quickly knelt to free her from the fence, smoothly claiming her arm before she could react. “So beautiful, in fact, that I think a little detour might be necessary.” He raised his eyebrow suggestively in case she missed his meaning.
Annoyance winning out over the flattery, she tried to swat his hand away from her. “Kakashi! That’s how we got into this mess in the first place!”
He laughed, knowing that it was true. But it was more than worth it in his opinion - and hers too, if she’d only admit it. Far from letting him win the argument though, she huffed and turned her back on him as much as she could with his hand still encircling her wrist, tossing several of the loose ropes of hair over her shoulder.
He studied her for a moment, weighing his options, and frowned when he realized there were really only two: go through with the mission and deal with a sulky Sakura for anywhere from a couple days to a couple weeks or skip it entirely in favor of trying to make the embarrassing experience up to his kunoichi.
Mind made up, he tugged sharply on her wrist, pulling the surprised woman to him. In one smooth motion he scooped her up, tossed her over his shoulder and took to the branches of the trees. Perfect mission records weren’t everything - the party could go on without them for all he cared. (And, if she kicked up a fuss he could always allow shadow clones to go in their stead.) What he really wanted was to spend the afternoon with Sakura, and if she was really that uncomfortable in the dress he wouldn’t make her go through with spending the entire afternoon and evening wearing it. At least, not when the alternative involved no clothing at all.

Tomoko squirmed in her seat in excitement. “Yes! Just like them!”
“You want to hear a story about … them?” he asked incredulously, unable to think of something to tell the young girl about Kakashi and Sakura that would be age appropriate. Their relationship was legendary around the village - but for reasons the little girl would not understand until she was a good many years older.
“Oh, yes!” she cried eagerly, eyes shining in anticipation. “A-A fairy tale!”
Taking one look at her, he couldn’t find it in himself to refuse. “Right… a fairy tale featuring Kakashi and Sakura….”

About: Fairy Tales are an important part of nearly everyone’s childhood, they entertained both the young and the old while delivering important warnings and life lessons (kind of like modern day sitcoms). So I set forth this test to you, loyal Kakashi X Sakura fans, to combine the fairy tales treasured in your childhood along with our favorite couple.
Your challenge is: Choose a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, Charles Perrault or the Brothers Grimm, adapt it to the Narutoverse, add Kakashi, Sakura, some more Naruto characters, and then write fanfiction that ends happily ever after!
Rules:
(Break them at your own peril.)
1. Length must be between 2,000-20,000 words. Multi-chapters are okay but entries will be judged only on what is posted before the deadline.
2. Kakashi X Sakura must be the central pairing. Other pairings within the fic are okay but Kakashi and Sakura must play the lead roles.
3. Your fic must be based on a well known fairy tale: those by
Hans Christian Andersen,
Charles Perrault or from the compilation of the
Brothers Grimm. Both original and ‘Disneyfied’ versions of these fairy tales are acceptable.
4. Entrants must sign up to enter and stake their claim on a fairy tale by June 7th. Please claim your fairy tale early as no two entrants can use the same story. (Loophole: tales by the Brothers Grimm tend to be very repetitive theme-wise…)
5. Kakashi and Sakura are not to be killed and violence is not to be depicted in all its gory glory.
6. Please remember to give credit where it’s due and mention both your source material and its author in your author’s note.
7. Imagination is a wonderful thing. This is why it is expected that you drop the plot of your fairy tale into the Naruto world rather than drop Kakashi and Sakura into the world of your fairy tale.
8. Fairy tales were written as stories to be enjoyed by audiences of all ages - stuff for the kids and for the adults. As such, the stuff for the adults must be written in such a way that it’s perfectly safe for children.
9. Entries are to be posted on the 30th of June (not before.) Copies are to be e-mailed to
caitiy at Caitiy@yahoo.com for the convenience of the judges.
10. Each story should include one iconic symbol from its source material. This symbol should be used in the title of the fic and the reader should be able to guess the fairy tale from this symbol.
**Some Clarifications**
Your story does not have to be fluff. But it does have to have a happy ending and any violence protrayed (Kakashi and Sakura are shinobi one would expect that there would be some fighting) cannot be graphically depicted. In other words, describing a fight in broad terms? Fine. Describing a fight down to the exact second to second detail of all the damage being inflicted upon the participants down to a molecular level? Not fine. Basically, the sort of violence you'd see in a kid's movie = okay. That does not mean, however, that the target audience is children. The original audience for fairy tales consisted of both children and adults alike. So, as part of a challenge, I'd like the content to be accessible to all ages. (Though, at the end of the day the audience will be the Kakashi X Sakura community as a whole which is largely made up of 'adult' type people.)
Date: All entries are due before July 1st. They are to be posted on June 30th (not before) and the voting thread will be opened on July 2nd.
Prizes: The winners of the competition will receive one of several fantastic prize packages!
• A Kakashi plushie, an assortment of Japanese snacks and a nifty banner.
• A Pakkun plushie, an assortment of Japanese snacks and a nifty banner.
• A Kakashi keychain, a Sakura keychain, an assortment of Japanese snacks and a nifty banner.
First prize awarded by the judges receives first pick of the prizes, second prize from the judges will receive second choice and the third package will go to the popular favorite. If the audience favorite should also be selected by the judges then the prize will go to the second place in the poll. (If the second is also chosen by the judges then it will go on to the third place.)
Submitting: Email your entries as an MS Word file to
caitiy at Caitiy@yahoo.com. All entries are due by July 1st, but they can be turned in earlier at your convenience. Please include in the email your name (author's name), your preferred email address, the title of your entry, and the name of the fairy tale which you adapted. Authors must email caitiy on June 30th with a link to their published stories.
Posting: Entries must be posted on June 30th - no earlier, no later. The authors may post their entries anywhere they like and then must email
caitiy a link, which she will use in an entry in KakaSaku.
Scoring: Scoring will be calculated in two categories:
Open voting (for reader’s favorite prize) A poll will be set up in kakasaku where people may go to vote on entries. The polls will be open from July 2nd through July 9th and the story with the most votes will win popular favorite. See the LJ community on July 2nd to cast your vote!
Judging (for judges prizes) Judges will give scores from 1 (bad) to 20 (excellent) in each of five categories. These categories are as follows:
I. Grammar, spelling, diction, and overall quality and mechanics of the author’s writing.
II. Adaptation: did the author remain faithful to the plot and thematic content of the original fairy tale while still adapting it to the Narutoverse?
III. Rule Adherence: did the author follow all of the outlined rules, including citing their source in the author’s note and using a key symbol from the fairy tale in the title of their story?
IV. General Enjoyability: this is where the judges can be completely subjective and score based off of how much they enjoyed the story.
V. Literary Merit: did the author emulate the fairy tale in more than just plot by using higher level writing devices such as fresh figurative language, pun, motifs, symbolism, etc.
These scores will be averaged for each category and added together for a total score that will be used to determine the winners of the judges prizes.
