The heretofore indecipherable to me process of utter humiliation of the pupil by the master (as in martial arts, for instance) has suddenly gained an interesting perspective. What if the purpose of such machinations is to allow the pupil to absolve themselves, for a time, of the responsibility of self-direction, to wholly and unthinkingly give ( Read more... )

humility - ono voobshe polezno dlja razvitija i obrazovanija. Esli prishla v klass i uzhe vse znaesh', to slushat' esli i budesh', to v-pol uha. A esli tebja UBEDILI chto ty nichego ne znaesh', vnimat' vse budesh' s otkrytoj varezhkoj. Sekret - ubedit' uchenika v ego nichtozhestve. Pered tem kak zadachu na doske reshat', dosku zhe nado eshe i vymyt'. Vot mozgi i promyvaut.

While removal of responsibility of direction would definitely help with most people, it also would turn away those who are really smart, who would still have some presence of self, but would turn away due to misdirected "absolution of self-direction," because certain self-direction is needed for successful studying and feeling healthy self-worth ( ... )

well, in asian martial arts the tradition of "apprenticeship" (even though somewhat overstated in the hong kong movies) roots in the chan' and later zen buddhism tradition. Similar priciple is used in basic training of old world armies (both oriental and western). The method might or might not be effective. Asian fighters generally do not prove to be superior to western fighters trained by more "western method". What this method does prove to be is cost-effective, which is why the army uses it. It is much easier to train a bunch of recruits by "we will break and then re-make" method than in any other way.
