I don't know if we are on the same page here, but for me it doesn't mean "death" itself as an event, but is related to question "What will I regret right before I die?". One man who spent a lot of time working with elderly in a nursing home noted an interesting fact: most of the time, they did not regret what they have done throughout their lives. Its the things they haven't done that they regretted the most. I realize that often doing something automatically implies not doing something else (choices...) but still, there is something to it.

That, too. But mostly it is an actual visceral sensation that I will not have time to reach the potential I feel within. Sort of like a scientist on the brink of a breakthrough...
