I'm starting to wonder if vengeance really IS a form of grief at all. It seems to me more like a control re-claimance. Thankfully I am not well-versed in feelings of grief, but I imagine vengeance is a mechanism through which people try to overcome their helplessness.

yes. except that if you do it not by facing the devastation within, but merely taking out the rage (one of i believe 5 or so stages of grief) on an external entity, you then get stuck with the dead weight of the other four forever...
