hmmmm. i loved the first season of Ooku. (okay, rightfully it's season 3, because the first two seasons aired in the 60s and the 80s. i'm talking about the one that aired in '03.) i couldn't watch it without subs though - the language was O_O it had a lot of history as well, about the attitudes of men and women during that time, even though it was very much from the perspective of the woman.
after that i didn't really catch up with the sequels.
a lot of people tell me Atsuhime's good too, but i'm not good with taiga dramas so i can't give you an opinion on that.
Certainly Yoshitsune is excellent, although it is very long. Takizawa does a superb job in it. Truly worth watching! I liked the movie: "When the last sword is drawn". Another very good long series is "Toshiie to Matsu", with Matsushima Nanako and a wonderful cast.
In recent dramas, Takizawa was also super in "Kimi ga kureta natsu". Go to http://takki.us for a hard-subbed version. It is a very moving true story.
I bought Yoshitsune over 3 years ago (expensive). But it is available subbed (though you obviously know Japanese) on the Sars fansub site. You can sample the "Ichi no Tani" episode, as well as episode 32, on YouTube. It is a super story in any case, Yoshitsune is one of Japan's great heroes, but this is particularly well done. Gorgeous costumes, as in all the NHK series. Takizawa also did the special Yukinojo in January 2008. It is a very interesting story (old Japan) where he plays 2 roles, an "onnagata" kabuki actor and a Robin Hood type robber. Available on various sites. No subs for this one.
I actually also found it on the lj community site jdramas. It is the SARS subbed version, but might be easier to download from. I think you will find it's worth your time.

You can watch Byakkotai and Yoshitsune for old Jap drama. I second Ooku suggestion. :)

Kimi ga kureta natsu seems a little depressing. I'm not usually a fan of 24hrTV

Subs might actually be better if it is archaic Japanese
