Trope of a trope

Sep 10, 2008 01:55

I wonder if there's a word for the literary device of using a trope, and then having your characters acknowledge the trope, and talk about it.

Lj-cut for spoilers, in which I discuss the ending to "Faith Manges."

It occured to me that the changes I'm making to "Last of the Time Lords" for my fic make the story... downright messianic.  And so the following story bit popped into my head.

"She gave her life to save the world.  Downright messianic, that."
"Now that you mention it, yeah.  Right down to the---before.  The glowing didn't hurt the image, either."
"If only... if only she'd follow the rest of the story.  On the third day she rose again, ascended into the heavens, and is seated at the right hand of the Doctor."
"Never let it be said you don't have an ego.  Hey, what does that make me?  The Holy Ghost?  No thanks."
"You'd get to play with fire."
"Okay, maybe.  You know... it hasn't been three days yet."
"Yes.  I know."
"Maybe..."
"No, Jack.  She's gone."
"Yeah."

...my brain is an interesting place.  I may have to clean that up for voices (so it sounds more like them) and use it.  Cause... they're right, you know.

Edit: More on that little scene:
"Hey, since when do you know the Apostles' Creed?"
"Jack.  I lived for three months in a small, conservative village.  In 1912."
"Right.  I forgot."
"Anyway... Since when do you know the Apostles' Creed?"
"You lived for three months in 1912.  I lived for twelve months in 1912.  And 1911, and 1913, and 1914..."
"Point.  You don't seem like the churchgoing type, though."
"Where else are you going to pick up women?"
"In church?  You really have no shame, do you."
"Why would I?"
"Right.  Sorry.  Sometimes I forget you're you."
"I'm not sure whether to be offended or not."
[Edit 2:]
"Why women?"
"What?"
"Why only women?  You said to pick up women.  And this is you.  So... why women?"
"I don't know.  Seemed disrespectful to flirt with the men in church.  Besides, the pub works better anyway."
"So you tried it."
"All right---a few times.  Yeah."
"Did it work?"
"What?"
"Picking up women, in church."
"Not very well.  Although... there were the nuns---"
"I don't want to know."
"Oh, come on.  Nuns have sexuality too."
"They're also nuns."
"What do you have against nuns?"
"They tried to kill me once.  And Rose.  And---you know---farmed millions of human beings to use as test subjects."
"Okay.  Point taken.  Although, these nuns weren't like that.  They were very sweet.  And had really sweet---"
"Jack.  I don't want to know."
"All right, all right.  No nuns."
