I still need to write up my Hunger Games movie thoughts. I really liked it, but I wasn't crazy about it either. The book is definitely a lot better. And I've been really curious to hear a non-reader's thoughts because there are things that I really think did not come across very well, and I think you've confirmed it in regards to Katniss/Peeta. Her behavior with him is very complex in the book; she's not even sure how much of it is for her own survival, for the audience, for her district, because it's the decent thing to do, or because she genuinely cares for Peeta. So I think her conflictedness (word?) could have been played up a lot more. But Jennifer and Josh I think are FANTASTIC.
Normally, I'm totally fine with "shaky-cam" but the use here looked more like it was used to cover up actor's terrible fighting skills and to avoid showing the violence than to make you feel like you're there.
I agree, so, so much.
Peeta/Katniss - Their whole story had weird pacing issues. I wasn't sure if he was playing her for most of the movie until he talked in the cave about the time he gave her bread. Then I felt terrible because he obvious was desperately in love with her but she only cared for him as a person. I don't want him to get his heart broken.
Like I said in my entry, this was not done well. My friend, who hadn't read the books, didn't get that Peeta had followed Cato and his gang at first to try to protect Katniss, that he had planned to protect her (as much as he could) all along. And we don't see that Katniss is not as into Peeta as she leads people to believe. Her confusion (because shestarts to care about him) is much more obvious in the books.
We should have seen Seneca in shock mentioning the poison and "

But Glimmer (or Foxface?) died because she ate some berries, after following Peeta. From that moment, we now the berries can kill...
That was not clear to me. I thought that Peeta had killed her with his strength and that he had been ambushed while picking berries. [shrugs] Obviously, its been explained to me now so I will recognize it next time.
I was totally gonna write a similar comment to Anna's about the Peeta/Katniss relationship. Some of my friends who hadn't read the books expressed similar concerns about the movie as you did. I think it some of the things didn't bother me because I knew what was supposed to happen and kinda filled in the blanks. Like I probably would have been totally confused by the bread flashbacks if I didn't know what they were trying to show. And also I did think Peeta's motives re: joining the Careers and such were not so clear. And Katniss' feelings because she doesn't even know / is confused

ah. you saw the hunger games. i was eagerly awaiting it since i finished the trilogy. book 1 is my favorite so i was really hoping it would be good.
overall, i liked it too but i had a few complaints. the biggest being the relationships felt a little flat since the movie didn't develop them enough. of course the book goes into detail and completely explains what's going on with peeta and katniss but there's also strong feelings between katniss and her mom and katniss and cinna that are barely touched.
i have a few more gripes but their rather minor. all and all, i think it was a fair job of bringing the book to the screen.
so, we have to chat dragons soon! maybe after episode 2?
