So: books that I've read are bolded. Books that I've read part of and never finished because I'm a slacker, or only had access to excerpts, are italicized.

Well, I'm usually of the opinion that no book needs to be banned, so I'm often confused even when it's obvious. I probably should read Handmaid's Tale again.

Oh, certainly I agree with you that no book needs to be banned, but of the books on this list, that one hits a lot of buttons that generally irritate those who are minded to do so. It's been a few years, but I remember it as a book with some graphic sexual activity, a theocratic state highly critical of patriarchical/religious family structure, and some lesbian activity in the celebrated underground society. Can't imagine what about that might cause an uproar... *grins* Oh, and yes - Ms. Cox (now Mrs. Shullaw, however disturbing that is) was always good for hijacking a class... I had my share of fun dominating our Shakespeare seminar a time or two. Good times.
