By now a lot of you have heard that John Galliano, enfante terrible of Christan Dior, was filmed committing an anti-Semitic outburst a few days ago in a Paris bistro ( Read more... )

I couldn't finish it. Even the expression on his face in the screenshot told me everything I needed to know.

As an artist I'm always tempted to defend other artists who have been offensive or even outright committed offenses, when I love their work. 'Yes, but look at this beautiful thing he did! People who can make things like that can't be all bad, can they?'

But really it's the other way round, isn't it? The poison in his mind has tainted everything he made for me. Which is...really sad. I think it may be too late for him; he clearly doesn't want help. Thank goodness they got a video so even his staunchest defenders can see how horrible he is.

Agreed with all of this. It's the old debate: do you hate Wagner because he was a notable anti-Semite but produced grandiose opera or do you try to reconcile the two things about him and conclude that his work should remain unaffected by his poisonous views about Jews?

Exactly. --which, if you were really interested, boils down to: I do like the music and love the story, but knowing what I know about Wagner I am uneasy about his character Alberich, who I always feel got the short end of the stick. :(

And when someone's dead, feelings soften toward them. A little.

(hey I miss having these talks!)

Me too! Why don't we talk more on LJ? It's ridiculous. I'll admit to being less active on LJ since my mother passed away, but I'm slowly working up to tagging my flist and managing to post on my own LJ every now and then. <3

I'm a bit confused by the number of people saying "Well, *I* don't know if he's anti-Semitic or not..."

He didn't give you any hints? Seriously?

Nothing to tilt the scales in any direction?

Anyone who'd say shit like that and not believe it is anti-Semitic *enough*. As in, too.

Yes, this. The "I love Hitler" said with a straight face is what sealed the deal for me before anything else he said.
